Mark Chapter Three

MARK CHAPTER THREE

1 Again he went into the synagogue,

And saw a man who had a shriveled hand;

2 And they were watching Jesus closely so

They could see whether he would heal him on

The Sabbath. 3 Jesus asked the man to come

And stand before the congregation, 4 then

Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath:

To do good deeds or evil deeds, to save

Life or to kill?” But they stayed silent. 5 He

Looked round at them in anger and, distressed

Deeply at their indifference, told the man,

“Stretch out your hand.” He did, and instantly

His hand was healed. 6 At once the Pharisees

Went out and met with the Herodians

To plot a way to murder Jesus. 7 In

The meantime, Jesus and his followers

Departed to the lake, and a large crowd

From Galilee was following them. 8 When

They heard all he was doing, many people

Came from Judea and Jerusalem,

Idumea, and regions from beyond

The Jordan River– even from as far

Away as Tyre and Sidon. 9 He told his

Disciples to prepare a little boat

For him in case the people crowded him

Too much, 10 for he had healed great numbers, so

Those with diseases pushed up to touch him.

11 Whenever evil spirits saw him, they

Fell down before him and cried out, “You are

The Son of God,” 12 but Jesus strictly warned

Them not to tell who he was. 13 Jesus went

Up on a mountainside and called to him

The ones he wanted, and they came to him.

14 Jesus appointed twelve as his apostles–

Men to be his companions, whom he could

Send out to preach 15 with the authority

To drive out evil spirits. 16 He appointed

These twelve men: Simon (whom he renamed Peter);

17 And James the son of Zebedee and John,

His brother (those two he called Boanerges,

Which means the Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, Philip,

Bartholomew, and Matthew, Thomas, James

Son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, and Simon

The Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot,

Who double-crossed him. 20 Jesus then went in

A house; again a crowd assembled, so

That he and his disciples were not even

Able to eat. 21 His family heard of this

And set out to take charge of him, for they

Said, “He’s out of his mind,” 22 and scribes who came

Down from Jerusalem remarked, “He is

Possessed by Beelzebub! By the prince

Of demons he is driving out the demons,”

23 So Jesus called to them and spoke to them

In parables: “How is it Satan can

Drive Satan out? 24 For if a kingdom is

Divided in itself, that kingdom can’t

Stand. 25 If a house is split against itself,

That house can’t stand, 26 and if Satan opposes

Himself and is divided, he can’t stand;

His end has come. 27 In fact, no one can enter

A strong man’s house and carry off his goods

Unless he first ties up the strong man. After

That, he can rob his house. 28 Believe me, all

The sins and blasphemies of men will be

Forgiven them, 29 but there can never be

Forgiveness for the blasphemy against

The Holy Spirit; the one who does that

Is guilty of an everlasting sin.”

30 He said this, for they were remarking, “He

Is in the power of an evil spirit.”

31 Then Jesus’ mother and his brothers came.

Standing outside, they sent a person in

To call him out to them. 32 A crowd was sitting

Around him, and they said, “Your mother and

Brothers are outside and they want to talk

With you.” 33 “Who are my mother and my brothers?”

He asked, 34 and then he looked at those who were

Seated around him in a circle, saying,

“Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 For

Whoever does the will of God– that other’s

My brother, and my sister, and my mother.”

For we know Him who said, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY ” And again, “THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.”
