Acts Chapter Eight

1 And Saul was there, consenting to his death.

On that day a great persecution rose

Against the church there in Jerusalem,

And all but the apostles fled into

Judea and Samaria. 2 Devout

Men buried Stephen, mourning him; 3 but Saul

Began to wreck the church. He went from house

To house and dragged off men and women and

Threw them in jail; 4 but those who had fled preached

The gospel everywhere they traveled. 5 Philip

Went to a city in Samaria

And preached of Christ to them. 6 The crowds paid heed

To him due to the miracles he did.

7 With shrieks, the evil spirits came out of

Many, and many paralytics and

Cripples were healed, 8 and so the town rejoiced.

9 Now for some time a man named Simon had

Done sorcery within the city and

Amazed the people of Samaria.

He boasted he was someone great, 10 and all

The people, high and low, respected him

Well and exclaimed, “This man is the great power

Of God.” 11 They followed him because he had

Amazed them with his magic a long time.

12 But now that they believed in Philip’s words

About the good news of God’s kingdom and

The name of Jesus Christ, they went and were

Baptized, both men and women. 13 Even Simon

Himself believed and he was baptized; then

He followed Philip everywhere, amazed

By the great signs and miracles he saw.

14 When the apostles in Jerusalem

Heard that Samaria had welcomed God’s

Word, they sent John and Peter down to them.

15 When they arrived, they prayed that they’d receive

The Holy Spirit, 16 for the Holy Spirit

Had not yet come on any one of them;

They simply had been baptized in the name

Of the Lord Jesus. 17 John and Peter then

Laid hands on them, and they received the Holy

Spirit. 18 When Simon saw the Spirit was

Given by the apostles laying hands,

He offered money, 19 telling them, “Give me

This power, too, so everyone whom I

May lay my hands on will receive the Holy

Spirit,” 20 and Peter said, “Your money die

With you, because you thought that you could buy

The gift of God with money! 21 You do not

Have any part or share in this concern,

Because your heart’s not right in front of God.

22 Turn from this wickedness and pray to God.

Perhaps he will forgive you for your thoughts

Of wickedness, 23 for I can see your heart

Is full of bitterness and bound to sin.”

24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to God for me

So none of what you’ve said may come on me.”

25 When they had testified and preached the word

Of God, they went back to Jerusalem,

Stopping to preach in many villages

Of the Samaritans along the way.

26 An angel of the Lord told Philip, “Go

South to the road−the desert road−that goes

Down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So

He started out, and on his way he met

An Ethiopian eunuch, treasurer

For Ethiopia’s Queen Candace. He

Had traveled to Jerusalem to worship,

28 And was returning in his chariot,

Reading aloud from Prophet Isaiah’s

Book, 29 and the Spirit said to Philip, “Go

Up to that chariot and stay near it.”

30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot

And hearing what the man was reading, asked

Him, “Do you understand what you are reading?”

31 “How can I,” he replied, “when no one has

Instructed me?” So he invited Philip

To come and sit with him. 32 The eunuch was

Reading this Scripture: “He was led

Just as a sheep to slaughter; as a lamb

Is silent in front of the shearer, so

He did not open up his mouth. 33 In his

Humiliation, justice was denied

To him. Who can express the wickedness

Of his descendants? For his life was taken

Out of the earth.” 34 The eunuch questioned Philip,

“Please tell me, who’s the prophet talking of,

Himself, or someone else?” 35 Then Philip opened

His mouth, and starting with that Scripture, told

Him the good news of Jesus. 36 As they went

Along the road, they reached some water and

The eunuch said, “Look, water! Why can’t I

Be baptized?” 38 And he had the chariot

Stop there, then he and Philip went down in

The water; Philip baptized him, 39 and when

They came up from the water, suddenly

The Spirit of the Lord took Philip off.

The eunuch never saw the man again,

But went along his way rejoicing. 40 Meanwhile,

Philip appeared at Azotus and, ‘til

He came to Caesarea, went around

And preached the word of God in all the towns.
