John Chapter Five

JOHN CHAPTER FIVE

1 After this came a Jewish feast day, and

Jesus went to Jerusalem. 2 Now in

The city near the Sheep Gate is a pool,

Which is called “Bethesda” in Aramaic.

It is surrounded by five covered platforms

Or porches. 3 Underneath these arches many

Sick people used to lie−the blind, the lame,

The paralyzed–and waited for the water

To move. 4 From time to time an angel of

The Lord would come down and stir up the waters.

The first one afterwards to enter in

The pool was healed. 5 One who was there had been

An invalid thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus

Saw him and learned how long he’d been ill,

He asked, “Would you like to get well again?”

7 “I can’t,” replied the invalid, “for I

Have no one to assist me in the pool

When the water is stirred. While I am trying

To get in, someone else goes down ahead

Of me.” 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up!

Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man

Was cured; he rolled his mat up and began

To walk. The day this happened was a Sabbath, 10 so

The Jews said to the man who had been healed,

“You can’t work on the Sabbath. It’s against

The law, your carrying that mat.” 11 But he

Replied, “The man who made me well told me,

‘Pick up your mat and walk.’” 12 So they asked him,

“Who is this man who said to you, ‘Pick up

Your mat and walk?” 13 The man who had been healed

Did not know who it was, for Jesus had

Withdrawn into the crowd there. 14 Later Jesus,

Finding him at the temple, said to him,

“See, you are well again. Stop sinning or

Else a worse thing may harm you.” 15 The man

Went off and told the Jews that it was Jesus

Who had healed him. 16 Since he’d done these things

On the Sabbath, they tried to kill him. Jesus

Told them, “My Father’s always at his work

Even until now and I, too, am working.”

18 Because of this the Jews tried all the harder

To kill him, for not only was he breaking

The Sabbath, but was even calling God

His Father, and so made himself God’s equal.

19 Jesus replied, “I’m telling you the truth,

The Son does nothing by himself, but he

Does only what he sees his Father doing,

For what the Father does the Son does too,

20 Because the Father loves the Son and shows

Him all that he himself is doing. He

Will show him even greater things than these,

And you will be amazed. 21 For as the Father

Raises the dead and gives them life, just so

The Son gives life to whom he’s pleased to give

It. 22 Even more, the Father judges no

One, but entrusts all judgment to the Son,

23 So that all may give honor to the Son

As they give honor to the Father. He

Who gives no honor to the Son fails to

Honor the Father, who sent him. 24 In truth

I tell you that whoever hears my word,

Believing him who sent me, has eternal

Life and won’t be condemned; he has crossed over

From death to life. 25 I tell you truly that

A time is coming and has now come when

The dead will hear the Son of God’s clear voice

And those who hear will live; 26 for as the Father

Has life within himself, in the same way

He’s given to the Son to have life in

Himself. 27 He’s given him authority

To judge because he is the Son of Man.

28 Don’t be amazed at this, for a time is

Coming when all the dead who are in graves

Will hear his voice and come out – 29 those who have

Done good will rise to live, and those who have

Done evil will arise to be condemned.

30 Alone I can’t do anything; I judge

Only as I am told. My judgment’s just,

For I seek not to please myself but him

Who sent me. 31 If I testify about

Myself, my testimony is not true.

32 There is another one who testifies

For me, and I know what he says of me

Is valid. 33 You have sent to John and he

Has testified as to the truth. 34 Not that

The testimony I receive is man’s,

But I refer to it so that you may

Be saved. 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave

Out light, and you were willing to rejoice

For a while in his light. 36 But testimony

I have is weightier than that of John.

Because the very work the Father’s given

Me to complete, and which I’m doing, proves

The Father’s sent me. 37 And the Father who

Sent me has testified himself about

Me; you have never heard his voice nor seen

His form, 38 nor does his word reside in you,

For you do not believe the one he sent

39 You diligently study Scriptures, for

You think that they give you eternal life.

These Scriptures point to me, 40 yet you refuse

To come to me to have this life. 41 I don’t

Accept the praise of men, 42 but I know you.

I know you do not have the love of God

Inside your hearts. 43 I have come in the name

Of my Father, and you do not accept

Me; but if someone else comes in his own

Name, you’ll accept him. 44 How can you believe

If you accept your praise from one another,

Yet make no effort to obtain the praise

Provided from the only God? 45 But do

Not think I will accuse you in front of

The Father. Your accuser’s Moses, whom

You’ve set your hopes upon. 46 If you believed

Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote

Of me. 47 And yet, because you don’t believe

His words, how’ll you have faith in what I speak?”
