This God is my strong refuge;

he makes my pathway safe.

Second Peter Chapter Two

SECOND PETER CHAPTER TWO

1 Among the people, though, there were false prophets,

Too, just as there will be false teachers in

The midst of you who secretly will bring

In harmful heresies and even will

Deny the Lord who brought them– bringing swift

Destruction on themselves, 2 and many will

Follow their shameful ways; because of them

The way of truth will be reviled, 3 and in

Their greed these teachers will exploit you with

Stories they have concocted; but the Lord

Condemned them long ago, and their destruction

Is on the way, 4 for if the Lord did not

Spare angels when they sinned, but threw them into

Hell, putting them in gloomy dungeons to

Be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare

The ancient world when he brought down the flood

On its ungodly people, but he saved

Noah, who preached of righteousness, and seven

Others; 6 if Sodom and Gomorrah were

Condemned and burned to ashes to reveal

What happens to ungodly people; 7 and

If he saved Lot, a righteous man, who was

Distressed by filthy lives of lawless men

8 (Because that righteous man, who lived among

Them day by day, was troubled in his soul

By wicked deeds he saw and heard)– 9 if this

Is so, then God knows how to save good men

From trials and to hold the wicked for

The day of judgment, while continuing

Their punishment, 10 which is especially true

Of those who follow the corrupt desire

Of sin and won’t obey their leaders. Bold

And arrogant, these men are not afraid

To scoff at glories of the unseen world;

11 Yet even angels, though they’re stronger and

More powerful, don’t judge them and accuse

Them in the presence of the Lord; 12 but these

Men, like brute beasts born only to be caught

And killed, speak badly of the things they do

Not understand, and like the beasts they too

Will perish; 13 they will be repaid with harm

For harm that they have done, for their idea

Of pleasure is carousing in the day.

They’re blots and blemishes who revel in

Their pleasures while they feast with you. 14 With eyes

Full of adultery, they never stop

Their sinning and lure unstable women;

They are well-trained in greed–they’re doomed and cursed.

15 They have gone off the road and wandered off

And lost their way like Balaam son of Beor,

Who fell in love with money he could make

By doing wrong, 16 but was rebuked for his

Wrongdoing when his donkey, which had no

Voice, spoke to him in a man’s voice and scolded

Him and restrained the prophet’s madness. 17 These

Men are like dried-up wells and clouds that storms

Drive; blackest darkness is reserved for them,

18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, with

Lust as their bait, entice the people who

Have just escaped from those who live in error.

19 They promise liberty to them, while they

Themselves are slaves to sin and ruin– for

Man’s a slave to that which masters him.

20 If they’ve escaped the world’s corruption by

Knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

And are again entangled in it and

Overcome, they are worse off at the end

Than they were at the start: 21 It would have been

Better for them if they had never known

The way of righteousness, than to have known

It, and then afterwards to turn their backs

Upon the heaven-sent commands that were

Passed on to them. 22 Of them are sayings true:

“A dog returns to what it’s vomited,”

And, “A washed pig returns to roll in mud.”
