February 4: Confusion

February 4

None of you know
or understand a thing.
You live in darkness,
while the foundations
of the earth tremble.
–Psalms 82:5

Nothing makes sense!
Everything is nonsense.
I have seen it all–
nothing makes sense!
–Ecclesiastes 1:2

No one has come to defend us
or to bring about justice.
We hoped for a day of sunshine,
but all we found
was a dark, gloomy night.
We feel our way along,
as if we were blind;
we stumble at noon,
as if it were night.
We can see no better

than someone dead.
–Isaiah 59:9-10

Second Peter Chapter Three

1 Dear friends, this is my second letter to

You now. I’ve written both of them to be

Reminders to goad you to wholesome thinking.

2 I want you to recall the words that were

Said in the past by holy prophets and

The order given by our Lord and Savior

Through your apostles. 3 First of all, you have

To understand that in the last days scoffers

Will come, and they will scoff and follow their

Own evil itches. 4 They will say, “Where is

This ‘coming’ that he promised? Ever since

Our fathers died, all things go on as they

Have since creation started.” 5 But they have

Forgotten purposely that long ago

By God’s word heavens came to be and Earth

Was formed from water and by water. 6 By

These waters too the world of that time was

Deluged and devastated. 7 By the same

Word are the present heavens and the earth

Reserved for fire, kept for the judgment day

And the destruction of ungodly men,

8 But don’t forget this one thing, dear friends: With

The Lord a day is like a thousand years;

A thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord

Is not slow-paced in how he keeps his promise,

As some consider slowness. He is patient

With you, for he does not want anyone

To die, but for all people to repent,

10 But like a thief the day of God will come,

And with a roar will heavens disappear;

Fire will destroy the elements;

The earth and all in it will be laid bare.

11 Since everything will be destroyed this way,

What kind of people should you be? You should

Live holy, godly lives 12 as you look forward

To God’s day and you speed its coming. That

Day will bring on the ruin of the heavens

By fire, and elements will melt in heat.

13 According to his promise we look forward

To a new heaven and a new earth, home

Of righteousness. 14 So then, dear friends, since you

Look forward to this, strive to be found spotless

And blameless and at peace with him, 15 and bear

In mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation,

As our dear brother Paul wrote you too with

The wisdom God bestowed on him. 16 He writes

In the same way in all his letters, in which

He speaks about these matters. Now his letters

Contain some things that are perplexing, which

Ignorant and unstable people twist,

As they do other Scriptures, to their own

Destruction, 17 so, dear friends, since you already

Know this, be on your guard so that you won’t

Be carried off by lawless men’s mistake

And fall from your secure position, 18 but

Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord

And Savior Jesus Christ through whom Love pours.

To him be glory now and evermore!
