First John Chapter Four

1 Dear friends, do not believe each spirit, but

Inspect the spirits to determine whether

They are from God, because a multitude

Of pseudo-prophets permeate the world.

2 This is the way that you can recognize

God’s Spirit: Every spirit that admits

That Jesus Christ has come in flesh is from

The Lord, 3 but every spirit that does not

Acknowledge Jesus Christ is not from God.

This is the spirit of the Antichrist,

Which you have heard will come and even now

Is in the world already. 4 You, my dear

Children, are from the Lord and have subdued

Them, for the one in you is greater than

The one who’s in the world. 5 They’re from the world

And therefore speak from the perspective of

The world, a world that listens to them. 6 We

Are from the Lord; whoever knows the Lord

Listens to us; but he who’s not from God

Won’t hear us. This is how we know the Spirit

Of truth and spirit of deceit. 7 Dear friends,

Let us love one another, for love comes

From the Lord. Everyone who loves has been

Born of the Lord and knows the Lord. 8 The one

Who does not love does not know God, for God

Is love. 9 This is how God revealed his love

To us: He sent his one and only Son

Into the world so we might live through him.

10 This then is love: not that we loved the Lord,

But that he loved us and sent us his Son,

A sacrifice atoning for our sins.

11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we too ought

To love each other. 12 No one ever has

Seen God; but if we love each other, God

Lives in us and his love is made complete

In us. 13 We know we live in him and he

In us, because he’s given us his Spirit.

14 We’ve seen and testify the Father’s sent

His Son to be the Savior of the world.

15 If someone recognizes Jesus is

The Son of God, God lives in him and he

In God, 16 and so we know and count on love

That God has for us. God is love. He who

Lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

17 In this way, love is made complete among

Us so we will have confidence upon

The day of judgment, for in this world we’re

Like him. 18 There is no fear in love, and yet

Perfect love drives out fear, for it concerns

Punishment. He who fears is not perfected

In love. 19 We love because he first loved us.

20 If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates

His brother, he’s a liar. For a man

Who does not love his brother, whom he’s seen,

Cannot love God, whom he has never seen,

21 And he has given us this law: That you

Who love the Lord must love your brother too.
