“A Hard Rain’s a – Gonna Fall” by Bob Dylan

A Hard Rain’s a – Gonna Fall
Bob Dylan

“Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
And where have you been my darling young one?”

“I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways
I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans”

“I’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain a-gonna fall”

“Oh, what did you see, my blue eyed son?
And what did you see, my darling young one?”

“I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin’
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin’ ”

“I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain a-gonna fall”

“And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?”

“I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin’
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin’
I heard ten thousand whisperin’ and nobody listenin'”

“I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin’
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
I heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall”

“Oh, what did you meet my blue-eyed son?
And who did you meet, my darling young one?”

“I met a young child beside a dead pony
I met a white man who walked a black dog
I met a young woman whose body was burning
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow”

“I met one man who was wounded in love
I met another man who was wounded in hatred
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall”

“And what’ll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
And what’ll you do now, my darling young one?”

“I’m a-goin’ back out ‘fore the rain starts a-fallin’
I’ll walk to the depths of the deepest dark forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters”

“Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
And the executioner’s face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where the souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number”

“And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect from the mountain so all souls can see it
And I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’
But I’ll know my song well before I start singin’
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall”

Revelation Chapter Two in blank verse

REVELATION CHAPTER TWO

1 “Write down a letter  to the angel of

The Church in Ephesus and tell him this:

‘I write to give you words from him who holds

The seven stars in his right hand and walks

Among the seven golden candlesticks:

2 I know your deeds; I’ve watched your hard work and

Your perseverance. I know that you can

Not tolerate your members’ sin, 3 and that

You’ve tested claims by those who say that they’re

Apostles but are not; and you have found

Them false. You’ve persevered and suffered for

Me, and you have not quit, 4 yet I hold this

Against you: you’ve forsaken your first love.

5 Remember then how far you’ve fallen, and

Repent and do the things you did at first.

If you do not repent, I’ll come to you

And I’ll remove your candlestick from its

Position with the churches, 6 but there’s this

That favors you: You hate the practices

Of the licentious Nicolaitans, as

I do. 7 Allow this word to sink into

The ears of anyone who listens to

The word the Spirit tells the churches: To

The man who gains the victory, I’ll give

The right to eat fruit from the Tree of Life

That’s in the Paradise of God; 8 and to

The angel of the church in Smyrna write:

“This message is from him who is the First

And Last, who died and came to life again.

9 I know how much you suffer for the Lord

And all about your poverty−yet you

Are rich! I know the slander spread by those

Opposing you, who say that they are Jews−

But aren’t, for they’ve thrown in with Satan’s cause.

10 Don’t be afraid of what you are about

To suffer, for the devil soon will test

You, having some among you thrown in prison,

And you’ll be persecuted for ten days.

Stay faithful to me even when you must

Face death, and I’ll give you the crown of life.

11 Let each who has an ear, hear what the Spirit

Says to the churches: The second death

Won’t harm at all the man who overcomes.”

12 And write this to the angel of the church

In Pergamum: ‘These words says he who wields

The keen-edged, double-bladed sword. 13 I know

That you reside where Satan has his throne,

And yet you have stayed faithful to my name,

And you did not renounce me, even when

My faithful witness, Antipas, was put

To death among you by the devotees

Of Satan in your city. 14 Just the same,

I have some things against you, because you

Have people there who do as Balaam did

When he instructed Balak how to cast

A stumbling block before the Israelites

By eating food that had been sacrificed

To idols and committing sexual sin.

15 Some also hold the Nicolaitans’ creed,

A teaching which I hate. 16 Repent! or else

I will soon come to you and fight against

Them with the sword of my own mouth. 17 Let each

Who has an ear, hear what the Spirit tells

The churches, and to him who overcomes,

I’ll give some hidden manna, and I’ll give

A white stone to him, and upon the stone

A new name will be written, only known

To him receiving it.’ 18 Now write to

The angel of the Thyatira church:

‘This is a message from the Son of God,

Whose eyes are like a flame of fire, with feet

Like burnished bronze. 19 I know your deeds, your love

And faith, your perseverance and your service.

Even more, I know you do more now than

You did at first, 20 yet I have this against

You: you permit that woman Jezebel,

Who calls herself a prophetess, to teach

My servants that sex sin is not important,

Who urges immorality on them

And has them eat food sacrificed to idols.

21 I gave her time to change her attitude,

But she refused, 22 so I will cast her on

A bed of suffering and I will make

Those who commit adultery with her

Hurt much if they don’t change their ways. 23 I’ll strike

Her children dead, then will the churches know

That I am he who searches hearts and minds,

And I’ll repay each one as his deeds warrant.

24 As for the rest of you in Thyatira

Who have not followed this false teaching of

Satan’s so-called ‘deep secrets’ (I will not

Ask anything more from you): 25 Only hold

Tightly to what you have until I come.

26 To him who overcomes and does my will

Until the end, I’ll give authority

Over the nations− 27 ‘He will rule them with

An iron scepter; they’ll be shattered like

A pot of clay that’s broken into pieces’−

The same as I received authority

From my own Father. 28 I’ll also give

The Morning Star to him. 29 Who has an ear,

The Spirit’s word to churches, he should hear.
