March 1: “Behind Me—dips Eternity” by Emily Dickinson

Behind Me—dips Eternity—
Before Me—Immortality—
Myself—the Term between—
Death but the Drift of Eastern Gray,
Dissolving into Dawn away,
Before the West begin—

’Tis Kingdoms—afterward—they say—
In perfect—pauseless Monarchy—
Whose Prince—is Son of None—
Himself—His Dateless Dynasty—
Himself—Himself diversify—
In Duplicate divine—

’Tis Miracle before Me—then—
’Tis Miracle behind—between—
A Crescent in the Sea—
With Midnight to the North of Her—
And Midnight to the South of Her—
And Maelstrom—in the Sky—

March 1: Single

March 1

I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.
–1 Corinthians 7:32-35

Revelation Chapter Seventeen in blank verse

1 One of the seven angels who had poured

The plagues out came and said to me, “Come, I’ll

Show you the judgment passed on the great harlot

Who sits on many waters, 2 with whom kings

Of earth debauched themselves and those who dwell

On earth have been intoxicated with

The wine of her adulteries.” 3 He took

Me in the Spirit to a desert, where

I saw a woman riding a red beast

Covered with names of blasphemy, and it

Had seven heads and ten horns. 4 Now the woman

Was dressed in red and purple, and she glittered

With gold and precious stones and pearls. She held

A golden goblet in her hand filled with

The evil filth of her adulteries.

5 A name was written on her forehead, and

It had a secret meaning: BABYLON

Tell she was drunk with saints’ and martyrs’ blood.

When I saw her, I was astonished, 7 and

The angel said, “Why are you so astonished?

I will tell you the mystery of her

And of the beast she rides with seven heads

And with ten horns. 8 The beast, the one you saw,

Once was, and now is not, and will come up

From the deep pit to be destroyed. The earth’s

Inhabitants whose names have not been written

Within the book of life from when the world

Was formed will be astonished when they see

The beast, for he once was, and now is not,

And yet will come. 9 A mind with wisdom can

Figure this out. 10 The seven heads stand for

The seven hills, hills where the woman sits.

They’re also seven kings, for five have fallen;

One is; the other king has not yet come;

But when he comes, he’ll rule a little while.

11 You also saw a beast that used to be,

And now is not, who is an eighth king who

Was one among the seven kings, who will

Return, but only for destruction, 12 and

The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have

Not yet received a kingdom, but who, with

The beast, will govern a short time. 13 They have

One mind and they will give the beast their strength

And power. 14 They will war against the Lamb,

And yet the Lamb will overcome them, for

He’s Lord of lords and King of kings−and those

With him are faithful, called and chosen.” 15 Then

The angel said to me, “The waters that

You saw, those where the prostitute is sitting,

Are peoples, nations, multitudes, and tongues.

16 The beast and the ten horns you saw will loathe

The prostitute. They’ll ruin her and leave

Her naked; they will eat her flesh and then

Scorch her with fire, 17 for God has put it in

Their hearts to carry out his purpose by

Mutually agreeing that they’ll give

The beast their sovereignty until God’s words

Have been fulfilled. 18 The woman you were viewing

Is the great city governing earth’s kings.”

The move has come just twenty-four years after apartheid officially ended

The South African parliament voted on Tuesday to move forward in amending their Constitution to allow for the confiscation of land from their white minority without compensation.

The move has come just twenty-four years after apartheid officially ended. Whites ended the apartheid system only with the explicit constitutional guarantee that their land would never be stolen, but now that they’ve become a small minority with rapidly dwindling political power that’s all gone out the window.
