Revelation Chapter Twenty-One

1 I saw then a new heaven and new earth,

For the first heaven and first earth had passed

Away, as had the sea, 2 and I, John, saw

The Holy City, New Jerusalem,

As it came down from God in heaven like

A bride adorned, prepared to meet her husband.

3 I heard a loud voice call, “God’s home is now

Among his people, and he’ll live with them.

They’ll be his people; God will make his home

With them; 4 he’ll wipe the tears out of their eyes.

No longer will there be death, suffering,

Crying, or pain, because the former things

Are passed away, 5 and he who sat upon

The throne said, “I make all things new!” 6 He told

Me, “Write this down: These words are true

And can be trusted. It is finished. I’m

The Alpha and Omega, the beginning

And the conclusion. I will give for free

Water from the life-giving fountain to

Everyone who is thirsty. 7 All who win

The victory will take these blessings. I

Will be their God and they will be my people.

8 As for the cowards and the faithless and

The vile, the murderers, the libertines,

The sorcerers, the idol worshipers,

And liars—they’ll be thrown into the lake

That burns with fire and burning sulfur, for

This is the second death.” 9 I saw one of

The seven angels with the seven bowls

Filled with the final seven plagues approach.

He said to me, “Come, I’ll show you the bride,

Wife of the Lamb.” 10 He took me in the Spirit

To a high mountaintop, where he showed me

Jerusalem, the Holy City, which

Came down from God in heaven, 11 and God’s glory

Brightened the city so it dazzled like

A precious jewel, jasper-like, as clear

As crystal, 12 and she had a great high wall

And twelve gates; at the gates, twelve angels. On

The gates were written names of the twelve tribes

Of Israel. 13 There were three gates each to

The north, south, east, and west. 14 The City wall

Had twelve foundations, and on them were names

Of the Lamb’s twelve apostles, 15 and the angel

Who talked with me had a gold measuring stick

To take measurements of the city, and

Its gates and walls. 16 The city was cube-shaped,

As long as it was wide. He took the rod

And measured: it was fifteen hundred miles

In height and fifteen hundred miles in width.

The length and breadth and height of it were equal.

17 The wall, he measured, too: it was about

Two hundred sixteen feet high.

18 The wall was built of jasper, and the city

Of pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The city wall’s

Foundation stones were inlaid with all kinds

Of precious gems. The first foundation was

Jasper; the second sapphire; the third was

Chalcedony; the fourth was emerald; 20 fifth,

Sardonyx; sixth, carnelian; seventh was

Chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz;

The tenth was chrysoprase, eleventh was

Jacinth; and the twelfth one was amethyst.

21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate created

Out of a single pearl. The city street

Was made with pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 I saw no city temple. The Lord God

Almighty and the Lamb—they are its temple.

23 The city does not need the sun or moon

To shine on it, because God’s glory gives

It light, the Lamb its lamp, 24 and nations saved

Will walk there by its light; earth’s kings will bring

Their riches into it. 25 On no day will

Its gates be shut, for there will be no night.

26 The nations’ splendid treasures will brought

To it, and nothing impure will go in,

27 Nor will immoral or dishonest people,

But in the City will come only those

With such names the Lamb’s Book of Life discloses.
