Some day Love shall claim his own
Some day Right ascend his throne,
Some day hidden Truth be known;
Some day—some sweet day.

Dear Land to which Desire forever flees;
Time doth no present to our grasp allow,
Say in the fixed Eternal shall we seize
At last the fleeting Now?

James Chapter Three

1 Not many of you should presume to be

Teachers, my brothers, for we know that we

Who teach will be more strictly judged. 2 We all

Stumble in many ways. If anyone

Is always faultless in what he declares,

He is a perfect man, proficient to

Keep his whole body in control. 3 When we

Put bits in horses’ mouths so they’ll obey

Us, we can turn the total animal.

4 Consider ships as an example. Though

They are immense and driven by fierce winds,

Yet they are guided by a very small

Rudder to where the pilot wants to go.

5 Likewise the tongue, though a small body part,

Does boast of great things. Think of how a great

Forest is set on fire by one small spark.

6 The tongue too is a fire, a world of wrong

Among the body parts. It taints the whole

Man, sets the whole course of his life on fire,

And it’s a fire that comes from hell. 7 Now men

Have tamed all kind of animals and birds,

Reptiles and creatures of the sea, 8 but none

Can tame the tongue, which is a restless wrong,

Replete with deadly poison, 9 for we praise

Our Lord and Father with our tongues, and with

Them we speak ill of men, made like the Lord.

10 From the same mouth come praise and cursing. My

Brothers, this should not be so. 11 Does a fountain

Send forth both sweet and bitter water? 12 My

Brothers, can the fig tree bear olive berries?

Or a vine, figs? So can no fountain yield

Water that is both salt and fresh. 13 Who is

A wise and understanding man you know?

Let him reveal it by his good life, by

Things that he does in the humility

That comes from wisdom, 14 but if you keep

And nurture bitter envy and self-serving

Ambition in your hearts, don’t boast about

It or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does

Not come down from above, but it is earthly,

Sensual, devilish, 16 for where you have

Envy and turmoil, there’s chaos and each kind

Of evil practice, 17 but the wisdom that

Is from above initially is pure,

Then peaceable and gentle, easy to

Talk with, replete in mercy and good deeds,

Impartial and sincere. 18 Peacefulness

That’s sown in peace grows into righteousness.
