1 This is the narrative of Esau (that

Is, Edom). 2 Esau took his wives out of

The Canaan women: Adah daughter of

Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah,

Daughter of Anah and the granddaughter

Of Zibeon the Hivite− 3 Basemath

Too, Ishmael’s daughter and the sister of

Nebaioth. 4 Adah bore Eliphaz to

Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel, 5 and

Oholibamah bore him Jeush, Jalam

And Korah. These were Esau’s sons who were

Born unto him in Canaan. 6 Esau took

His wives and sons and daughters and the members

Of his own household, and his livestock and

His other animals and all the goods

He had acquired in Canaan, and moved to

A land some distance from his brother Jacob.

7 And their possessions were too great for them

To stay together; and the land which they

Inhabited could not support them both

Due to their livestock. 8 So Esau (that is,

Edom) got settled in the hills of Seir.

9 This is the narrative of Esau, father

Of Edomites in Seir’s hills. 10 These are

The names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz, son

Of Adah, Esau’s wife, and Reuel, son

Of Esau’s wife named Basemath. 11 The sons

Of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho,

Gatam and Kenaz. 12 Esau’s son Eliphaz’s

Concubine was named Timna, and she bore

Him Amalek. These were grandsons of

Esau’s wife Adah; 13 sons of Reuel: Nahath,

Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were grandsons

Of Esau’s wife named Basemath. 14 The sons

Of Esau’s wife Oholibamah daughter

 Of Anah, granddaughter of Zibeon,

Whom she bore unto Esau: Jeush, Jalam

And Korah. 15 These were chiefs among descendants

Of Esau: Sons of Eliphaz the firstborn

Of Esau: The chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho,

Kenaz, 16 Korah, Gatam and Amalek,

Who were the chiefs descended from Eliphaz

In Edom; they were Adah’s grandsons. 17 Sons

Of Reuel, Esau’s son: Chiefs Nahath, Zerah,

Shammah and Mizzah. These were chiefs descended

From Edom’s Reuel, and they were the grandsons

Of Basemath, the wife of Esau. 18 Sons

Of Esau’s wife Oholibamah: Chiefs

Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were chiefs

Descended from the wife of Esau, who

Was Anah’s daughter Oholibamah.

19 These were the sons of Esau (Edom), and

These were their chiefs. 20 These were the sons of Seir

The Horite, who lived in the region: Lotan,

Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21 Dishon, Ezer

And Dishan. Seir’s sons in Edom were

The Horite chiefs. 22 The sons of Lotan: Hori

And Homam. Lotan’s sister was named Timna.

23 The sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath,

Ebal, Shepho and Onam. 24 Aiah

And Anah were the sons of Zibeon.

This Anah had discovered hot springs in

The desert while he grazed the donkeys of

Of Zibeon, his father. 25 Anah’s children:

Dishon and Oholibamah, who was

Anah’s daughter. 26 The sons of Dishon: Hemdan,

Eshban, Ithran and Keran. 27 Ezer’s sons:

Bilhan and Zaavan and Akan. 28 Sons

Of Dishan: Uz and Aran. 29 Horite chiefs

Were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon and Anah,

30 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. So these were

The Horite chiefs, by their divisions, in

The land of Seir. 31 These were the kings who reigned

In Edom, all before an Israelite

King reigned there: 32 Bela son of Beor did

Become the king of Edom, and his city

Was named Dinhabah, 33 and when Bela died,

Jobab the son of Zerah out of Bozrah

Succeeded him as king. 34 When Jobab died,

Husham out of the land of Temanites

Succeeded him as king. 35 When Husham died,

Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated

Midian in the land of Moab, came

Next as the  king. His city was named Avith.

36 When Hadad died, a Samlah from Masrekah

Succeeded him as king. 37 When Samlah died,

Shaul from Rehoboth on the river came

As king next, 38 and when Shaul died, Baal-Hanan

The son of Acbor came as the next king next.

39 When Baal-Hanan, Acbor’s son, died, Hadad

Succeeded him as king. His city was

Named Pau, and his wife’s name was Mehetabel

Daughter of Matred, daughter of Me-Zahab.

40 By name, these were the chiefs descended from

Esau, by clans and regions: Timna, Alvah,

Jetheth, 41 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon,

42 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43 Magdiel and Iram.

These men were Edom’s chiefs, according to

Their settlements the land they occupied.

Esau was father of the Edomites.

Crimes and Criminals

The key is to commit crimes so confusing that police feel too stupid to even write a crime report about them.

~Randy K. Milholland, Something Positive Comic, 10/30/03

There is no den in the wide world to hide a rogue. Commit a crime and the earth is made of glass. Commit a crime, and it seems as if a coat of snow fell on the ground, such as reveals in the woods the track of every partridge, and fox, and squirrel.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

1 Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne Jacob,

Went out to visit women of the land.

2 When Shechem son of Hivite Hamor, who

Governed the area, saw her, he took

Her and he raped her, 3 for his heart was drawn

To Dinah, Jacob’s daughter, and he loved

The girl and he spoke tenderly to her.

4 And Shechem told his father Hamor, “Get

This girl for me to be my wife.” 5 When Jacob

Heard that his daughter Dinah had been raped,

His sons were in the fields to tend his livestock;

So he maintained his peace ‘til they came home.

6 Then Shechem’s father Hamor went to talk

With Jacob. 7 Jacob’s sons had come in from

The fields as soon as they heard what had happened,

And they were filled with grief and fury, for

Shechem had tainted Israel by lying

               With Jacob’s daughter—such a thing could not

Be tolerated. 8 Hamor told them, “My

Son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter.

Let her be his wife. 9 Intermarry with

Us; give to us your daughters and you take

Our daughters for yourselves. 10 You settle here

With us; the land’s wide open to you. Live

In it and trade in it, gain property

In it.” 11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father

And brothers, “Let me find your favor, and

I will give you whatever you may ask.

12 Make the bride-price and gift I am to bring

Great as you like, and I will pay whatever

You ask me. Only give the girl to me

To be my wife.” 13 Because their sister Dinah

Had been defiled, the sons of Jacob answered

Deceitfully as they conversed with Shechem

And Shechem’s father, Hamor. 14 They told them,

“We can’t do such a thing; we cannot give

Our sister to a man uncircumcised,

Because that would disgrace us. 15 We’ll consent

Only on one condition: You become

Like us by circumcising all your males.

16 Then we’ll give you our daughters and we’ll take

Your daughters for ourselves. We’ll settle in

Your midst and we’ll become one people with

You, 17 but if you will not agree to be

Circumcised, we will take our sister and

Go.” 18 Their proposal did seem good to Hamor

And his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was

Most honored of his father’s household, lost

No time to do what they had said, because

He was so pleased with Jacob’s daughter, 20 so

Hamor and his son Shechem went up to

Their city gate to meet their fellow townsmen

And speak to them. 21 “These men are friendly toward

Us,” they said. “Let them live within our land

And trade in it; the land has ample room

For them, so we can wed their daughters and

They can wed ours, 22 but their own men agree

To live together with us only on

Condition that our males be circumcised,

As they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their

Property and their other animals

Become ours? So let us give our consent

To them, and they will settle in our midst.”

24 All men who went out from the city gate

Agreed with Hamor and with his son Shechem,

And every male inside the city was

Circumcised. 25 Three days later, while they were

In pain still, Dinah’s brothers, Simeon

And Levi, two of Jacob’s sons, took their

Swords and attacked the unsuspecting city,

And killed each male, 26 and Hamor and his son

Shechem they killed with swords and they took Dinah

From Shechem’s house and took off. 27 Jacob’s sons

Came on the scene of slaughter and they looted

The city where their sister was defiled.

28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and

Everything else of theirs inside the city

And in the fields. 29 They carried off their wealth

And all their women and their children, taking

As plunder everything in houses. 30 Then

Jacob told Simeon and Levi, “You

Have brought me trouble, making me a stench

To Canaanites and Perizzites, the people

Residing in this land. We’re few in number,

And if they join their forces to fight me

And they attack me, I and my whole household

Will be destroyed.” 31 They said, “Should we ignore

It when he treats our sister like a whore?”
