James Chapter Four

JAMES CHAPTER FOUR

1 Why do you fight and quarrel? Don’t they come

From your desires that war within you? 2 You

Want, and don’t have: you kill, and you desire to

Have things and can’t get them: you fight and clash,

Yet do not have, because you do not ask.

3 You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask

With unbecoming motives, so that you

May spend what you receive on your diversions.

4 Unfaithful people, don’t you know that your

Friendliness with the world is bitterness

Toward God? whoever then is friendly with

The world is God’s antagonist. 5 Do you

Think that the Scripture does not mean a thing

When it is written that the spirit that

He gave to live with us envies intensely?

6 But he provides us with more grace, which is

Why Scripture says: “The Lord resists the proud

But gives the meek His grace.” 7 Submit yourselves,

Therefore, to God. Resist the devil, and

He’ll flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he’ll

Come near to you. You sinners, wash your hands,

And purify your hearts, you double-minded.

9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Let there be tears instead

Of laughter, and let your joy be changed to gloom.

10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he

Will lift you up. 11 Don’t slander one another,

Brothers, for anyone who speaks against

His brother or who judges him thus speaks

Against the law and judges it− and when

You judge the law, you are not keeping it,

But passing judgment on it. 12 There is but

One Lawgiver and Judge, one who can save

And ruin. What gives you the right to judge

Your neighbor? 13 Listen, you who say, “Today,

Maybe tomorrow, we will go to such

A city, spend a year there, carry on

Our business and make money.” 14 Why, you do

Not even know what will occur tomorrow.

What is your life? You are a mist that comes

A little while and vanishes. 15 Instead,

You ought to say, “If it’s the will of God,

We will live and do this or that.” 16 The way

It is, you boast and brag. Such boasting’s wrong.

17 Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought

To do and doesn’t, sins right on the spot.
