First Peter Chapter One

FIRST PETER CHAPTER ONE

1 From Peter, one of Jesus Christ’s apostles,

To God’s elect, exiles scattered throughout

Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia,

Bithynia and Asia, 2 who’ve been chosen

According to the foreknowledge of God

The Father, through the sanctifying work

Of the Spirit, for following Jesus Christ

And sprinkling by his blood: may grace and peace

Be multiplied to you. 3 All honor to

The God and Father of our Lord Christ Jesus!

In his great mercy we’ve been born anew

Into a living hope, for Jesus Christ

Has risen from the dead. 4 For you God has

Safeguarded an inheritance that never

Can perish, spoil or fade−reserved in heaven

For you, 5 who through your faith are shielded by

God’s power for a salvation set to be

Revealed in the last time. 6 In this rejoice,

For there is joy ahead, though for a while

You may have had to suffer many kinds

Of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith−

Of greater worth than gold, which perishes

Even though it’s refined by fire−may be

Proved genuine and may result in praise,

Glory and honor on the day that Jesus

Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him,

You love him; and though you do not see him

Now, you believe in him, rejoicing with

An inexpressible and splendid joy,

9 For you’re receiving the objective of

Your faith, your souls’ salvation. 10 This salvation

Was something that the prophets searched intently

And with the greatest care for, as they spoke

About the grace which was to come to you,

11 Attempting to find out the time and persons

Christ’s Spirit was directing them to when

He told them to write down events which, since

Then, have occurred to Christ: his suffering

And his great glory afterward. 12 It was

Revealed to them they did not serve themselves,

But you, when they spoke of the things that have

Now been told you by those who’ve preached to you

The gospel by the Holy Spirit sent

From heaven. Even angels long to look

Into these things, 13 and so, prepare your minds

For deeds; be sober; set your hope entirely

Upon the grace that will be given you

When Jesus Christ returns. 14 Obey God, for

You are his children, don’t slip back into

Your old ways−doing evil as you did

When you did not know better. 15 But just as

He who called you is holy, so be holy

In all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be

Holy, for I am holy.” 17 Since you call

Upon a Father who’s impartial when

He judges each man’s work, conduct yourselves

With fear throughout your time of exile here,

18 For you know that you were not redeemed from

The empty way of life your fathers handed

Down to you with things perishable

Like gold and silver, 19 but he paid for you

With the precious lifeblood of Christ, a lamb

Without a blemish or a spot, 20 who was

Chosen before the world’s creation, but

Was brought to public view in these last times

For your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God,

Who raised him from the dead and glorified

Him so your faith and hope can rest in him

Alone. 22 Now that you’ve purified yourselves

By following the truth so that you have

Sincere love for your brothers, see to it

That you love one another deeply, from

The heart, 23 for you’ve been born again, not of

A tainted seed, but incorruptible

Seed, through the living and enduring word

Of God, 24 because, “All men are grass, and all

Their glory’s like the flowers of the field;

Grass withers, flowers fall, 25 but God’s word’s true

Forever”− that’s the word we preached to you.
