April 22: Sleep (Bible Passages)

Day Williams created this graphic depiction of this date.

April 22

As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and everything became dark and frightening.
–Genesis 15:12

They sleep naked in the cold,
Because they have no cover.
–Job 24:7

On the first day of the week we met to break bread together. Paul spoke to the people until midnight because he was leaving the next morning. In the upstairs room where we were meeting, there were a lot of lamps. A young man by the name of Eutychus was sitting on a window sill. While Paul was speaking, the young man got very sleepy. Finally, he went to sleep and fell three floors all the way down to the ground. When they picked him up, he was dead. Paul went down and bent over Eutychus. He took him in his arms and said, “Don’t worry! He’s alive.” After Paul had gone back upstairs, he broke bread, and ate with us. He then spoke until dawn and left. Then the followers took the young man home alive and were very happy.

1 The LORD told Moses: 2 “Set my tent up on

The first day of the year 3 and put the chest

Which has the Ten Commandments there behind

The inside curtain of the tent. 4 Bring in

The table; set upon it those things that

Are made for it, and also ring inside

The lampstand and attach the lamps to it,

5 Then place the golden incense altar in

Front of the sacred chest and hang a curtain

Right at the entrance to the tent. 6 And set

The altar for the burning sacrifices

Before the entrance to my tent, 7 and put

The large bronze bowl between the tent and altar

And fill the bowl with water. 8 Then surround

The tent and altar with the wall of curtains

And hang the entrance curtain. 9 Dedicate

The tent and everything in it to me

With sacred olive oil. 10 Do the same with

The altar where you offer sacrifices

And its equipment–11 also with the bow

And its stand. 12 Summon Aaron and his sons

To the tent entrance and see that they wash

Themselves; 13 dress Aaron in the priestly clothes,

Ordain him using sacred olive oil;

Commit him to me as my priest, 14 and put

The priestly robes on Aaron’s sons; 15 ordain

Them in the same way, so that they and their

Descendants always will be my priests.” 16 Moses

Followed the LORD’s instructions. 17 On the first

Day of the first month of the second year,

They set the sacred tent up, 18 and the posts,

The framework, and the stands were put in place,

19 Then the two layers of the coverings

Were hung on them. 20 They stored the stones which had

The Ten Commandments written on them in

The sacred chest, they put the mercy place

On top of it, and they attached the poles

To carry it. 21 They brought the chest inside

The tent and set the chest behind the curtain

In the most holy place. They did these things

Exactly as the LORD told Moses. 22 They

Then put the table for the sacred bread

Along the north wall of the holy place,

23 And set the bread upon the table. 24 By

The south wall they did place the lampstand, 25 then

They did attach the lamps to it before

The LORD. 26 The golden incense altar was

Set up before the curtain, 27 and sweet‑smelling

Incense was burned on it. These things were done

Exactly as the LORD commanded Moses.

28 They hung the curtain at the entrance to

The sacred tent, 29 and then they put the altar

To offer sacrifices in front of

The tent, and offered sacrifices of

Animals and grain gifts there. 30 Next, they put

The large bronze bowl between the altar and

The entrance to the tent, and they filled it

With water. 31 Moses, Aaron, and the sons

Of Aaron washed their hands and feet. 32 In fact,

They washed each time before they went inside

The tent or offered sacrifices at

The altar, and they did all of these things

Exactly as the LORD commanded Moses.

33 Finally, Moses had the curtain hung

Around the courtyard. 34 Suddenly a cloud,

A thick cloud, covered up the sacred tent

And filled it with the glory of the LORD,

35 So Moses could not go inside the tent.

36 And when the cloud moved from the tent, the people

Would break their camp and follow it; 37 then they

Would set up camp and stay there ’til it moved

Again. 38 No matter where the people traveled,

The LORD went with them, and each day his cloud

Hovered above the tent; each night a crowd

Came out and saw and fire within the cloud.
