LEVITICUS CHAPTER SIXTEEN

LEVITICUS CHAPTER SIXTEEN

1 After the death of Aaron’s two sons, who

Died when they came near God, 2 the Lord said to

Moses: “Go tell your brother Aaron that

He’s not to come whenever he may choose

In the Most Holy Place behind the curtain

In front of the atonement cover on

The ark, or else he’ll die, for I’ll appear

Within the cloud above th’atonement cover.

3 Aaron shall go in the Most Holy Place

Like this: He first must bring a young bull for

An offering for sin and then a ram

For a burnt offering. 4 He is to don

The sacred linen tunic, and next to

              His body, linen undergarments, he

Shall tie the linen sash around him and

Put on the linen turban. As these are

Some sacred garments, he must bathe himself

With water first, before he puts them on.

5 From the community of Israelites

He is to take two male goats for a sin

Offering and for a burnt offering,

A ram, 6 and Aaron is to offer up

The bull for his sin offering

To make atonement for himself and his

Own household, 7 then he shall take the two goats

And shall present them in front of the Lord

Right at the entrance to the meeting tent.

8 He is to cast lots for the two goats—one

Lot for the Lord, the other for the scapegoat.

9 Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to

The Lord and sacrifice it for a sin

Offering, 10 but the goat selected by

The lot as scapegoat shall be brought alive

Before the Lord and will be used to make

              Atonement, sending it in wilderness

To be a scapegoat. 11 Aaron is to bring

The Scapegoat by William Holman Hunt

The bull for his sin offering to make

Atonement for himself and his own household,

And shall kill the bull for his own sin

Offering. 12 He shall take a censer full

Of burning coals down from the altar in

Front of the Lord and take two handfuls of

Finely ground fragrant incense and take them

Behind the curtain, 13 then he is to put

The incense on the fire before the Lord,

And incense smoke will hide th’atonement cover

Above the tablets of the covenant

Law, so that he won’t die. 14 He is to take

Some bull’s blood with his finger and he shall

Sprinkle it on the front of the atonement

Cover; then he shall sprinkle some with his

Finger seven times before the atonement

Cover.    15 He shall then kill the goat to be

The offering of sin for people and

Shall take its blood behind the curtain and

Do with it as he did with the bull’s blood:

He’ll sprinkle it on the atonement cover

And in front of it. 16 In this way he will

Atone for the Most Holy Place due to

              The Israelites’ uncleanness and rebellion,

No matter what their sins have been. He is

To do the same thing for the meeting tent,

Which is among them in the midst of their

Uncleanness. 17 No one is to be inside

The meeting tent from the time Aaron goes

In to atone in the Most Holy Place

‘Til he leaves, having made atonement for

Himself, his household and for Israel’s

Community. 18 Then he shall come out to

The altar that’s before the Lord and make

Atonement for it. He shall take some bull’s

Blood and some goat’s blood and put it on all

The altar horns. 19 He is to sprinkle some

Blood on it with his finger seven times

To cleanse it and to consecrate it from

The Israelites’ uncleanness. 20 When he has

Finished making atonement for the Most

Holy Place, and the meeting tent and altar,

He shall bring forward the live goat. 21 He shall

Lay both hands on the head of the live goat

And shall confess on it the Israelites’

Wickedness and rebellion—all their sins—

And put them on the goat’s head. He shall send

The goat away into the wilderness

In care of one appointed for the task.

22 The goat will carry on itself their sins

To a remote place; and the man shall let

It go out to the wilderness. 23 Then Aaron

Shall go inside the meeting tent and take

Off linen garments he put on before

He went in the Most Holy Place, and he

Shall leave them there, 24 then he shall bathe himself

With water in the sanctuary and

Put on his normal clothes, then sacrifice

Burnt offerings, both for himself and for

The people. 25 He shall also burn the fat

Of the sin offering upon the altar.

26 The man who lets the goat as scapegoat go

              Must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water;

Afterward he may come in the camp. 27 The bull

And goat for the sin offerings, whose blood

Was brought in the Most Holy Place to make

Atonement, you must take outside the camp;

And you shall burn their hides, flesh and intestines.

28 The man who burns them has to wash his clothes

And bathe himself with water; afterward

He may come in the camp. 29 This is to be

A lasting ordinance for you: Upon

The tenth day of the seventh month you must

Deny yourselves and not do any work—

Whether a native or a foreigner

Who lives with you— 30 for on this day you’ll be

Atoned, and it will cleanse you. Then, before

The Lord, you will be clean from all your sins.

31 It is a day of sabbath rest, and you

Have to deny yourselves; this ordinance

Is lasting. 32 The anointed priest who is

Ordained to take his father’s place as high

Priest is to make atonement. He’s to put

The sacred linen garments 33 on and then

Atone for the Most Holy Place, and for

The meeting tent and altar, and for priests

And the community. 34 This is to be

A lasting ordinance for you: You are

To make atonement once a year for sins

Of Israelites,” and so it was performed

In the same way the Lord commanded Moses.
