Respect Your Leaders

Respect Your Leaders

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
~Hebrews 13:17 ESV

We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
~1 Thessalonians 5:12-14 ESV

“You shall not revile God, nor curse a ruler of your people.”
~Exodus 22:28 ESV

LEVITICUS CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

LEVITICUS CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

1 The Lord told Moses, 2 “Direct Aaron and

His sons to show respect to offerings

The Israelites will consecrate to me,

So they will not profane my holy name.

I am the Lord. 3 Tell them: ‘For generations

To come, if any one of your descendants

Is ceremonially unclean and yet comes

Close to the sacred offerings, the ones

The Israelites shall consecrate to God,

That person must be cut off from my presence.

I am the Lord. 4 If a descendant of

Aaron has a defiling skin disease

Or a bodily discharge, he may not

Eat sacred offerings until he’s cleansed.

And he will also be unclean if he

Shall touch a thing that is defiled, as by

A corpse or by a man who’s had a semen

Emission, 5 or if he shall touch a thing

That crawls that makes him unclean, or a person

Who makes him unclean–this, no matter what

The uncleanness may be. 6 The one who touches

A thing like that is unclean ‘til the evening.

He must not eat the sacred offerings

Unless he’s bathed himself with water. 7 When

The sun goes down, he will be clean, and after

That he may eat the sacred offerings,

Because they are his food. 8 He must not eat

A thing found dead or that wild animals

Have torn, and so become unclean through it.

I am the Lord. 9 The priests are to perform

My service so that they do not become

Guilty and die because they treated it

Contemptuously. I’m the Lord, who makes

Them holy. 10 Nobody who’s not a member

Of a priest’s family may eat the sacred

Offering, nor may the priest’s guest or his

Hired worker eat it, 11 but if a priest buys

A slave with money, or if slaves are born

Within his household, they may eat his food.

12 If a priest’s daughter marries a non-priest,

She may not eat the sacred contributions,

13 But if the daughter of a priest becomes

A widow or she is divorced, yet has

No children, and returns to live in her

Own father’s household as she did in youth,

Then she may eat her father’s food. But no

One who’s unauthorized may eat it. 14 One

Who eats a sacred offering by his

Mistake has to make restitution to

The priest for the same offering and add

One-fifth the value to it; 15 priests are not

To desecrate the sacred offerings

That Israelites present the Lord 16 by letting

Them eat the sacred offerings and so

Bring on them guilt requiring payment. I’m

The Lord, who makes them holy.’” 17 God told Moses,

18 “Tell Aaron and his sons and Israelites

This word: ‘If any of you—whether you’re

An Israelite or foreigner who lives

              In Israel—gives a burnt offering

To God, a freewill offering or to

Fulfill a vow, 19 you must present a male

Which has no defect from the cattle, sheep

Or goats so it may be accepted for

You; 20 don’t bring anything which has a defect,

For God will not accept it. 21 Anyone

Who brings from herd or flock a fellowship

Offering to the Lord in order to

Fulfill a special vow or as a freewill

Offering, must present an animal

Which has no defect and no blemish, or

It will not be accepted. 22 Do not offer

To God the blind, the injured or the maimed,

Or anything with warts or festering

Or running sores. Do not place any one

Of these upon the altar as a food

Offering you present to God, 23 but you

May give for freewill offering an ox

Or else a sheep that is deformed or stunted,

But God won’t take it for a vow fulfillment.

24 You must not offer God an animal

Whose testicles are bruised, crushed, torn or cut.

You must not do this in your own land, 25 and

You are not to accept such animals

From foreigners and offer them as food

Of your own God. They will not be accepted

On your behalf, because they are deformed

And they have defects.’” 26 The Lord told Moses, 27 “When

A calf, a lamb or goat is born, it shall

Stay with its mother seven days, and then

From the eighth day on, it will be acceptable

As a food offering presented to

The Lord. 28 Don’t kill a cow or sheep and its

Young on the same day. 29 When you sacrifice

An offering of thanks to God, do it

In such a way that it will be accepted

On your behalf. 30 It must be eaten that

Same day; leave none till morning. I’m the Lord.

31 Keep my commands and follow them. I am

The Lord. 32 Do not profane my holy name,

Because the Israelites have to admit

That I am holy. I’m the Lord, who made

You holy 33 and who brought you out of Egypt

As your God; I’m the Lord who set you free.”

LEVITICUS CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

1 The Lord told Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites:

‘An Israelite or foreigner who lives

              In Israel who sacrifices his

Child Sacrifice to Molek

Own children unto Molek shall be killed.

Members of the community shall stone

Him. 3 I myself will set my face against

Him and will separate him from his people;

For when he sacrificed his children

To Molek, he defiled my sanctuary

And he profaned my holy name, 4 and if

People in the community shall close

Their eyes when that man sacrifices his

Own child to Molek and if they do not

Put him to death, 5 I will myself set my

Own face against him and his family

And will cut them off from their people with

All those who follow him in prostituting

Themselves to Molek. 6 I will set my face

Against a man who turns to mediums

              And spiritists to prostitute themselves

By following them, and I will cut them

Off from their people. 7 Consecrate yourselves;

Be holy, for I am the Lord your God.

8 Keep my decrees and follow them. I am

The Lord, who makes you holy. 9 Anyone

Who curses his own parents–father or

              Mother–you are to execute. Because

They’ve cursed their father or their mother, their

Blood will be on their own head. 10 If a man

Sleeps with somebody else’s wife—sleeps with

His neighbor’s wife—then you shall put to death

              Th’adulterer and the adulteress.

11 And if a man has sexual relations

With his own father’s wife, he has disgraced

His father. Both the man and woman shall

Be put to death; their blood will be on their

Own heads; 12 and if a man has sex with his

Daughter-in-law, you are to kill them both.

What they have done is a perversion, and

Their blood will be on their own heads; 13 and if

A man has sexual relations with

A man as one does with a woman, both

Of them have done what is detestable.

You shall put them to death; their blood will be

On their own heads. 14 If a man marries both

A woman and her mother, it is wicked.

You must burn them all in the fire, so that

No wickedness will be among you. 15 If

A man has sexual relations with

An animal, you are to execute

              Him, and you have to kill the animal;

16 And if a woman nears an animal

For sex with it, kill both the woman and

              The animal. They shall be put to death;

Their blood will be on their own heads; 17 and if

A man shall marry his own sister, daughter

Of either his own father or his mother,

And they have sex, it’s a disgrace. You shall

Publicly take them from their people. He’s

Disgraced his sister and is responsible.

18 Now if a man has coitus with a woman

During her monthly period, he has

Exposed the source of her flow, and she has

Uncovered it, too. You shall cut them both

Off from their people. 19 Don’t have sexual

Relations with the sister of your mother

Or father, for that would disgrace close kin;

              And you both would be held responsible;

20 And if a man has sex with his own aunt,

He has disgraced his uncle, and they will

Be held responsible; they will die childless.

21 If a man weds his brother’s wife, that is

Impure; he has disgraced his brother. They’ll

Be childless. 22 Keep all my decrees and laws

And follow them, so that the land where I

Am bringing you to live won’t barf you out.

23 You must not live by customs of the nations

That I’ll drive out before you. As they did

All these things, I abhorred them; 24 but I said

To you, “You will possess their land; I will

Give it to you as an inheritance,

A land that flows with milk and honey.” I’m

The Lord your God, who has set you apart

From nations, 25 so you must discriminate

Between the clean and unclean animals

And clean and unclean birds. Do not defile

Yourselves by any animal or bird

Or anything that moves along the ground—

Those that I’ve stated are unclean for you.

26 You must be holy to me because I,

The Lord, am holy; I’ve set you apart

From nations as my own. 27 A man or woman

Who is a medium or spiritist

Among you must be killed. You are to stone

Them; their blood will be on their heads alone.’”

LEVITICUS CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

1 The Lord told Moses, “Say to Aaron’s sons,

The priests, ‘A priest must not make himself unclean

              Ceremonially for any of

His people who may die, 2 except for some

Close relative, such as his mother or

Father, his son or daughter, or his brother,

3 Or an unmarried sister who depends

On him because she has no husband—for

Her he may make himself unclean. 4 He must

Not make himself unclean for people who

His kin by marriage, and defile himself.

5 Priests must not shave their heads or shave off their

Beards’ edges nor are they to cut their bodies.

6 They must be holy to their God and they

Must not profane the name of their own God.

As they present food offerings to God,

The food of their own God, they must be holy.

7 They must not marry women who have been

Defiled by prostitution or divorced

From their own husbands, for the priests are holy

To God.  8 Treat them as holy, for they offer

Up your God’s food. Consider them as holy,

For I the Lord am holy—I who make

You holy, 9 and if a priest’s daughter should

Defile herself through whoredom, she disgraces

Her father; you must burn her in the fire.

10 The high priest, one among his brothers who

Has had anointing oil poured on his head

And who has been ordained to wear the clothes

For priests, is not to let his hair become

Unkempt or tear his clothes. 11 He must not go

Inside a place where a dead body lies.

He must not make himself unclean, not even

For his own father or his mother, 12 nor

Leave from the sanctuary of his God

Or desecrate it, for th’anointing oil

Of God has made him dedicated. I’m

The Lord. 13 The woman whom he marries has

To be a virgin. 14 He is not to marry a widow,

A woman who’s divorced, or one defiled

By prostitution, but shall marry only

A virgin from his people, 15 so that he

Will not defile his progeny among

His people. I’m the Lord, who makes him holy.’”

16 The Lord told Moses, 17 “Say to Aaron: ‘For

The coming generations none of your

Descendants with a defect may come near

To offer his God’s food. 18 No man who has

A defect may come near: no man who’s blind

Or lame, disfigured or deformed; 19 no man

Who has a crippled foot or hand, 20 or who’s

A hunchback or a dwarf, or who has an eye

Defect, or who has sores that run or fester

Or who has damaged testicles, 21 for no

Descendant of Priest Aaron who has any

Defect shall come close to present the food

              Offerings to the Lord. He has a defect;

He is not to come near to offer food

Of his own God; 22 although he may consume

The holiest food of his God, as well

As holy food; 23 and yet due to his defect,

He is not to go near the curtain or

Approach the altar, and so desecrate

My sanctuary. I’m the Lord, who makes

Them holy.’” 24 Moses therefore told this right

To Aaron, his sons, and the Israelites.
