July 12: Hope

July 12

But I will hope continually, and will yet praise Thee more and more.

–Psalms 71:14

That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.

–Psalms 78:7

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.

–Romans 12:12

1 The priests who are the Levites—and indeed,

Levi’s whole tribe—are to have no allotment

Nor an inheritance with Israel.

They are to live on the food offerings

Presented to the Lord, for that is their

Inheritance. 2 Among the Israelites

They shall have no inheritance; the Lord

Is their inheritance, just as he has

Promised them, 3 and this share is due the priests

From people who have sacrificed a bull

Of sheep: the shoulder, the internal organs

And meat out of the head. 4 You shall give them

The firstfruits of your grain, your new wine, and

Your olive oil, and the first wool that comes

From shearing sheep, 5 because the Lord your God

Has chosen them and their descendants out

Of all your tribes to stand and minister

Always in God’s name. 6 If a Levite moves

Out of a town you have to anywhere

In Israel where he is living, and

Comes in all earnestness to where the Lord

Has chosen, 7 he may minister in God’s

Name like his fellow Levites who serve there

In the Lord’s presence, 8 and he is to share

Equally in their benefits, although

He has received some money from the sale

Of family possessions. 9 When you go

Into the land the Lord your God is giving

You, do not learn to imitate the ways,

The awful ways, of nations there. 10 Let none

Be found among you who has sacrificed

Their son or daughter in the fire, or who

Has practiced divination, sorcery,

Or witchcraft, who interprets omens 11 or

Casts spells, or who’s a medium or who’s

A spiritist or who consults the dead.

12 The Lord detests a man who does these things;

Because of these same awful practices

The Lord your God will drive those nations out

Before you. 13 You are to be blameless in

Front of the Lord your God. 14 The nations you

Will dispossess do listen to the ones

Who practice sorcery or divination,

But as for you, the Lord your God has not

Permitted you to do the same. 15 The Lord

Your God will raise a prophet up for you

Like me out of your fellow Israelites.

You are to listen to him, 16 for you asked

The Lord your God at Horeb on the day

Of the assembly, “We don’t want to hear

The Lord our God’s voice nor see this great fire

Anymore, or we’ll die.” 17 The Lord told me:

“What they have said is good. 18 I will raise up

For them a prophet like you from among

Their fellow Israelites, and I will put

My words inside his mouth. He will tell them

Everything I command him. 19 I myself

Will hold accountable a man who does

Not listen to my words the prophet speaks

In my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes

To speak in my name anything I have

Not ordered, or a prophet who shall speak

In names of other gods, is to be put

To death.” 21 Now you may ask yourselves, “How can

We know when messages are not from God?”

22 If what a prophet says in the Lord’s name

Does not occur or come true, that’s a message

God has not spoken, and that prophet has

Spoken on his authority, not

For God, so don’t let him scare you a jot.
