DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

1 Now if you see your fellow Israelite’s

Ox or sheep straying, don’t ignore it but

Be sure that you return it to its owner.

2 If they don’t live near you or if you do

Not know who owns it, take it home with you;

Keep it ‘til they come looking for it, then

Give it back. 3 Do the same if you shall find

Their donkey or their cloak or anything

Else they have lost. Do not ignore it. 4 If

You see a donkey or an ox, one that’s

Owned by a fellow Israelite, and it

Has fallen on the road, do not ignore

It. Help the owner get it to its feet.

5 A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor

A man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord

Your God detests a person who does this.

6 Now if you find a bird’s nest by the road,

Either inside a tree or on the ground,

And mother bird is sitting on the young

Or on the eggs, don’t take the mother with

The young. 7 You may scoop up the young, but be

Certain to let the mother go, so that

It may go well with you and you may have

A long life. 8 When you build a new house, make

A parapet around your roof so that

You may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on

Your house if somebody falls from the roof.

9 Don’t plant two kinds of seed inside your vineyard;

For if you do, not only crops you plant

But also vineyard fruit will be defiled.

10 Do not plow with a donkey and an ox

Both yoked together. 11 Don’t wear clothes of wool

And linen jointly woven. 12 On the cloak

You wear, make tassels on four corners. 13 If

A man shall take a wife and, after he

Has slept with her, dislikes her 14 and he slanders

Her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I

Married this woman, but when I approached

Her, I did not find proof she was a virgin,”

15 Then the young woman’s father and her mother

Shall bring to the town elders at the gate

Proof that she was a virgin, 16 and her father

Will tell the elders, “I have given my

Daughter in marriage to this man, but he

Dislikes her. 17 Now he’s slandered her and said,

‘I found your daughter was no virgin.’ But

Here’s proof my daughter was a virgin.” Then

Her parents shall display the cloth before

Town elders, 18 and the elders are to take

The man and punish him, 19 and they’ll fine him

A hundred silver shekels and give them

To the young woman’s father, for this man

Has given a bad name unto a virgin

Israelite. She is to continue as

His wife, and he must not divorce her as

Long as he lives, 20 but if the charge is true

And none can prove that the young woman was

A virgin, 21 men shall take her to the door

Of her own father’s house, where men from her

Town are to stone her ‘til she dies. She has

Done an outrageous thing in Israel

By promiscuity while still in her

Own father’s house. You are to purge the evil

From your midst. 22 If you find a man who has

Sex with somebody else’s wife, both he

Who slept with her and she, his partner, are

To die. You are to purge the evil from

Israel. 23 Now if a man chances to

Meet in a town a virgin pledged to be

Wed and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take them

Both to the gate of that town and stone them

‘Til they die—the young woman, as she was

Inside a town and did not scream for help;

The man, for he defiled another man’s

Own wife. You are to purge the evil from

Among you, 25 but if someone in the country

Meets a young woman who’s engaged and rapes

Her, only he who has done this shall die.

26 Do nothing to the woman; she has done

No sin deserving death. This case is like

That of somebody who attacks and murders

A neighbor, 27 for the man has found the girl

Out in the country, and although the woman

Who is betrothed had screamed, no one was there

To rescue her, 28 and if a man should chance

To meet a virgin who’s not pledged to be

Married and rapes her and they are discovered,

29 He must take fifty silver shekels and

Must pay her father them, and also he

Must marry the young woman, for he has

Defiled her, and he never can divorce

Her his whole life. 30 A man is not to wed

His father’s wife, nor taint his father’s bed.
