DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

1 No man who’s been emasculated by

Crushing or cutting may go in the Lord’s

Assembly. 2 No one born out of a marriage

That is forbidden and not one of their

Descendants may go in the Lord’s assembly,

Not even down to the tenth generation.

3 No Ammonite or Moabite or any

Of their descendants may go in the Lord’s

Assembly, not to the tenth generation,

4 For they did not come to meet you with bread

And water on your way when you came out

Of Egypt; they hired Balaam son of Beor

From Pethor out in Aram Naharaim

To cast a curse on you, 5 but God would not

Listen to Balaam but He turned the curse

Into a blessing for you, for the Lord

Your God loves you, 6 so do not seek a treaty

Of friendship with them as long as you live.

7 Don’t hate an Edomite, for Edomites

Are kin to you. Don’t hate Egyptians, for

You lived as foreigners within their country.

8 Third generation children born to them

May enter God’s assembly. 9 When you are

Encamped against your enemies, keep off

From impure things. 10 Now if a man you have

Is unclean because of a nightly discharge,

He is to leave the camp and stay outside

It, 11 but as evening nears he is to wash

Himself; at sunset he may go back to

The camp. 12 Set up a place outside the camp

Where you can travel to relieve yourself.

13 As part of your equipment have a tool

To dig with, and when you relieve yourself,

Dig a hole; cover up your excrement,

14 Because the Lord your God moves in your camp

To keep you safe and to deliver your

Adversaries to you. Your camp has to

Be holy, so he will not see among

You anything indecent and turn off

From you. 15 Now if a slave has taken shelter

With you, don’t hand them to their master. 16 Let

Them live among you where they like and in

Whatever town they choose. Do not oppress

Them, 17 and no Israelite—a man or woman—

Is to be a shrine prostitute. 18 You must

Not bring the earnings of a prostitute—

Female or male—into the house of God

To pay a vow, because the Lord your God

Detests them both. 19 Do not charge interest to

A fellow Israelite on money, food,

Or other things that may earn interest. 20 You

May charge a foreigner the interest, but

Don’t charge a fellow Israelite, so that

The Lord your God may bless you in all that

You work on in the land you’re entering

To have. 21 Now if you vow to God, do not

Be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God

Will certainly demand it of you and

You’ll suffer sin-guilt, 22 but if you do

Not make a vow, you won’t be guilty. 23 Be

Sure that you do whatever you say, for

You freely made your vow to God with you

Own mouth. 24 If you go in your neighbor’s vineyard,

Eat all the grapes you want, but do not put

Some in your basket, 25 and if you go in

Your neighbor’s grainfield,  pick the kernels with

Your hands—you have free reign—but do not place

A sickle to your neighbor’s standing grain.
