JOSHUA CHAPTER SEVEN

JOSHUA CHAPTER SEVEN

1 But there was sin among the Israelites,

For Achan disobeyed the LORD. He was

The son of Carmi, son of Zimri, son

Of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah. He

            Had taken some of the devoted things;

The LORD was angry with the Israelites

Because of this. 2 Now Joshua sent some men

From Jericho to Ai, town beside

Beth Aven to the east of Bethel. He

Commanded them, “Go up and spy upon

The region,” so the men went up and spied

Out Ai, 3 and came back to Joshua and

Told him, “Not all the people must attack

The town. Two thousand or three thousand men

Should be enough, because the city’s small,”

4 And so about three thousand men went up,

But Ai’s men attacked and routed them,

            5 And killed approximately thirty-six

Of them when they attacked the city, then

They chased them from the city gate as far

As the stone quarries, killing them upon

The slopes. The army of the Israelites

Was paralyzed with fear at this, their hearts

Melting like water. 6 Joshua tore his clothes

And fell facedown upon the ground before

The Ark of God, remaining there until

The evening, with Israeli elders by

His side, and they had sprinkled dust upon

Their heads, 7 and Joshua said, “Ah, Sovereign LORD,

Why did you ever have this people cross

The Jordan River to deliver us

Into the hands of Amorites, to kill

Us? Why weren’t we content with what we had

There on the Jordan’s other side? 8 O LORD,

What can I say, when Israel has turned

Her back and fled before her enemies?

9 The Canaanites and other people in

The land will hear of this; they will surround

Us and attack us and eradicate

Our name from earth. What then will you do for

The honor of your own great name?” 10 The LORD

Told Joshua, “Get up! Why have you gone down

Upon your face? 11 For Israel has sinned;

They’ve disobeyed my covenant, which I

Commanded them to keep. They’ve taken some

Of the devoted things; they’ve stolen, lied,

And put them with their own possessions, 12 which

Is why the Israelites can’t stand against

Their enemies; they turn their backs and run

Because they’re cursed. No longer will I stay

With you unless you go obliterate

Whatever is accursed. 13 Go, consecrate

The people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves

            In preparation for tomorrow, for

The LORD, the God of Israel, says one

Of you has stolen from him, and you can’t

Defeat your enemies ‘til you confront

This sin. 14 Tomorrow morning you must come

By tribes, and God will take the tribe to which

The guilty man belongs. That tribe must come

By clans. The LORD will take the guilty clan,

Which must come by its family, and then

Each member of the guilty family

Must come out man by man. 15 He who is caught

With the devoted things shall be destroyed

By fire along with everything he has,

For he’s transgressed the covenant of God

And he has brought calamity upon

All Israel,” 16 so Joshua rose at dawn

And brought the tribes of Israel before

The LORD, and Judah was selected; 17 then

The clans of Judah came, and Joshua took

The Zerahites. The Zerahites came out

            By families and Zimri’s family

Was taken. 18 Joshua had his family

Come forward man by man, and Achan son

Of Carmi, son of Zimri, Zerah’s son,

Of Judah’s tribe, was taken. 19 Joshua said

To Achan then, “My son, give glory to

The LORD, the God of Israel; give him

The praise, and tell me what you’ve done; don’t hide

It from me.” 20 Achan answered, “I have sinned

Against the LORD, the God of Israel.

It’s true, 21 for when I saw among the spoil

A pretty robe from Babylonia,

Two hundred silver shekels, and a gold

Bar weighing fifty shekels, I desired

Them and I took them, and they’re hidden in

The ground beneath my tent, and underneath

The rest, the silver lies,” 22 so Joshua sent

Some messengers who hurried to the tent

And found the stolen goods beneath the tent,

The silver underneath, as Achan had

Described. 23 They took the things from underneath

The tent and brought them back and placed them on

The ground in front of Joshua and the LORD

And all the Israelites; 24 then Joshua, with

All Israel along, took Achan son

Of Zerah, and the silver and the robe,

The gold bar, his sons and his daughters, his

Cattle, his donkeys and his sheep, his tent

And everything he had, and brought them to

The Achor Valley. 25 Joshua said, “Why have

You brought calamity on us? The LORD

Will bring calamity on you today.”

All Israel then stoned him. After they

Had stoned the rest, they burned them, 26 and they heaped

A pile of rocks on him. The stones remain

There to this day. Today the place is called

The Valley of Calamity. They died,

And so the LORD’s fierce anger did subside.
