SECOND SAMUEL CHAPTER TWENTY: Sheba Rebels against David

SECOND SAMUEL CHAPTER TWENTY: Sheba Rebels against David

1 Then Sheba, a hot-headed Benjamite,

Stood up and blew a trumpet, then he yelled,

‟We have no share in David, and no part

In Jesse’s son! You men of Israel,

Come on, let’s leave! He’s not our king!” 2 So all

Except for Judah and for Benjamin

Deserted David for the Benjamite,

The son of Bicri, Sheba, but the men

Of Judah stayed with him from Jordan to

Jerusalem, 3 and when the king arrived

He ordered that the concubines, all ten

Of them, he’d left to keep house be put in

Seclusion under house arrest. He would

Provide for them, he said, but did not sleep

With them again, so they remained confined

Living as widows ‘til their day of death.

4 Then David told Amasa, ‟Mobilize

The men of Judah and report to me

In three days and be here yourself,” 5 but he

Took longer than the time the king had set

For him, 6 then David said to Abishai,

‟Now Sheba son of Bicri will abuse

And harm us more than Absalom, so take

Your master‘s men and chase him before he finds

A barricaded city where we can’t

Reach him.” 7 So Joab’s men, the Kerethites

The Pelethites, and all the mighty men

Went out with Abishai in charge, and marched

Out from Jerusalem to chase the head

Of rebels, Sheba, Bicri’s son, 8 then as

They came to Gibeon’s great rock, they

Met Amasa, who came to meet the group.

His cousin Joab had his uniform

On with a dagger strapped alongside him.

As Joab stepped toward Amasa to greet

Him as the new commander of the troops,

He slipped the dagger from its sheath, 9 and said,

‟My brother, I am glad to see you,” then

He took his cousin by the beard with his

Right hand as though to give a kiss to him,

10 But Amasa was not on guard against

The dagger in his left hand, vengeance blade,

For Joab stabbed him in the stomach with

The blade, so his intestines spilled out on

The ground. Without another stab, he died,

Then Joab and his brother Abishai

Pursued the son of Bicri, Sheba, as

An officer of Joab shouted to

11 The troops of Amasa, ‟If you are for

The king, then come and follow Joab!” 12 But

Lying in the road awash in blood was

The corpse of Amasa, and anyone

Who saw him stopped, and when the man saw that

The people stopped, he carried Amasa

Out of the road and to a field, and threw

A garment over him, 13 and with the corpse

Out of the way, the troops accompanied

Joab to capture Sheba, Bicri’s son.

14 The rebel Sheba passed through Israel

              To Abel Beth Maacah gathering

His clan of Bicri for rebellion. 15 When

The troops of Joab reached the town, they built

A siege ramp to the city, standing it

Against the outer towers, gates, and walls,

And started battering the wall to bring

It down, 16 but a wise city woman called

To Joab, ‟Listen to me, Joab. Come

Over to me so that I can confer

With you.” 17 As he approached, she asked, ‟Is that

You, Joab?” ‟I am Joab,” he replied.

She said, ‟Hear what your servant has to say.”

‟I’m listening,” said Joab. 18 She went on,

‟There used to be a saying, ‛If you want

To settle a dispute, get your advice

At Abel,’ for Abel gives good advice.

19 This is a peaceful, faithful city, but

You’re here to ruin it. Should you destroy

What is the Lord’s?” 20 And Joab answered, ‟Far

Be it from me to raze or swallow up!

21 That isn’t it. A man named Sheba son

Of Bicri, from Ephraim’s hills, has raised

His hand against the king, King David. Hand

Him over and your city’s left in peace.”

‟All right,” the woman said, ‟we’ll throw his head

Over the wall to you,” 22 and she advised

The people of the city, who cut off

The head of Sheba son of Bicri, who’d

Rebelled against the king, and threw the head

To Joab, general of David’s troops,

Who blew the trumpet and his men dispersed

From Abel Beth Maacah, each to his

Own home, and Joab rode back to the king.

23 The army’s general was Joab, while

Benaiah, Jehoiada’s son, had

              Command of Kerethites and Pelethites,

24 And Adoniram was in charge of forced

Labor battalions while Jehoshaphat,

Ahilud’s son, was the recorder, 25 and

The secretary was named Shiva. Priests

Were Zadok and Abiathar. 26 The priest

For David, his own minister, was named

Ira the Jairite, who thus gained fame.
