SECOND SAMUEL CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

SECOND SAMUEL CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO:

David’s Psalm of Praise

1 And David sang this song to God the day

The Lord delivered him out of the hand

Of all his enemies, and from the hand

Of Saul, the king who persecuted him:

2 Jehovah is my rock, my fortress and

My Savior. 3 I’ll take refuge in my God,

Who is my stronghold and my hiding place.

Thank you, my Savior, you have saved me from

My enemies, the men of violence.

4 I’ll call upon the Lord, who’s worthy to

Be praised. He’ll save me from my enemies.

5 The waves of death encompassed me and swirled

Around me. Torrents of ungodly men

Overwhelmed me. 6 The sorrows of the grave

Confronted me. 7 In my distress I called

Upon the Lord, I called out to my God.

He heard me from his Temple, and my cry

Ascended to his ears. 8 The earth itself

Trembled and quaked, and heaven’s columns shook.

They trembled from his anger. 9 Smoke shot

Out from his nostrils and consuming fire

Leapt from his mouth, 10 and glowing coals flamed forth

From him, 11 who mounted cherubim and flew

Upon the wings of wind across the earth.

12 He wove the darkness as his canopy,

Dark waters and thick clouds of skies, and from

13 The brightness of his presence lightning bolts

Went forth. 14 He thundered from above the skies,

The voice of the Most High resounded. 15 He

Shot arrows and He scattered enemies.

16 The channels of the sea appeared; the world’s

Foundations were exposed by God’s rebuke,

Breath from his nostrils blasted them off. 17 He

Sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out

Of many waters. 18 He delivered me

From my strong enemy, from those who hated

Me, for they were too strong for me, 19 and they

Confronted me in my distressful day,

But God supported me, 20 and brought me forth

Into a broad place; He saved me because

I gave him joy. The lightning bolts struck them

Down; he delivered me from my strong foe,

From those who hated me, because they were

Too strong for me. 21 God has rewarded me

According to my righteousness; by how

Clean are my hands he’s recompensed me, 22 for

I’ve kept God’s ways and I’ve not acted like

A criminal against my God, 23 for all

His ordinances were before me, and

As for His statutes, I did not depart

From them, 24 and I was blameless toward Him, and

I kept myself from my iniquity.

25 Therefore the Lord has recompensed me by

My righteousness, as to my cleanness in

His eyes. 26 Now with the kind You show Yourself

As kind, with blameless men You show Yourself

As blameless; 27 With the pure You show Yourself

As pure, and with perverted men You show

              Yourself astute. 28 You save a stricken people;

But Your eyes are on the haughty whom

You will abase, 29 for You’re my lamp, O Lord;

And God lights up my darkness, 30 for by You

I can run on a troop, and by my God

I can leap over a high wall. 31 And as

For God, His way is blameless; God’s word is

Tested; He is a shield to all who take

Refuge in Him. 32 For who is God, besides

The Lord? And who’s a rock, besides our God?

33 “God is my mighty fortress, and He sets

The blameless in His way. 34 He makes my feet

Like hinds’ feet, and sets me on my high places.

35 He trains my hands for battle, so my arms

Can bend a bow of bronze. 36 You’ve given me

The shield of Your salvation, and Your help

Makes me enormous. 37 You enlarge my steps

Under me, and my feet have not slipped. 38 I

Pursued my enemies and wiped them out,

And I did not turn back until they were

Consumed, 39 and I’ve devoured them, shattered them

So that they did not rise; and they fell under

My feet, 40 for You have girded me with strength

For battle; You’ve subdued beneath me those

Who rose against me. 41 You have also made

My adversaries turn their backs to me,

And I destroyed the men who hated me.

42 They looked, but there was none to rescue; even

To God, but He did not reply to them.

43 I pulverized them as earth’s dust; I crushed

And stamped them like they were street mud. 44 You’ve saved

Me from my people’s arguments; you’ve kept

Me as the nations’ head; a people whom

I have not known serve me, 45 while foreigners

Pretend that they obey me; as soon as

They hear me, they obey me. 46 The foreigners

Lose heart, and they come quaking out of their

Fortresses, 47 for the Lord lives; blessed be

My rock; exalted be the Lord, the rock

Of my salvation; 48 He is the same God

Who executes his vengeance for me, and

Who brings down peoples under me, 49 who brings

Me from my enemies; You even lift

Me over those who rise against me; You

Rescue me from the brutal man. 50 So I’ll

Give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations,

And I’ll sing praises to Your name. 51 He is

A saving tower for his king, and

              He shows lovingkindness unto His

Anointed, unto David and to more:

To him and his descendants evermore.”
