SECOND KINGS CHAPTER FOUR

SECOND KINGS CHAPTER FOUR

1 A woman who was married to a man

Out of the company of prophets cried

Out to Elisha, “Sir, your servant my

Husband is dead, and you know he revered

The LORD, but now his creditor is coming

To take my two boys as his slaves.” 2 Elisha

Replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell

Me, what do you have in your house?”

 “Your servant

Has nothing there at all,” she said, “except

A little oil.” 3 Elisha said, “Go on

And ask your neighbors for their empty jars.

Don’t ask for just a few, 4 then go inside

And shut the door behind you and your sons.

Pour oil in all the jars, and as each one

Is filled, put it to one side.” 5 She left him

And afterward she shut the door behind

Her and her sons. They brought the jars to her

And she kept pouring. 6 When all jars were full,

She told her son, “Bring me another one.”

But he replied, “There is not one jar left.”

And then the oil stopped flowing, 7 so she went

And told the man of God, and he said, “Go

And sell the oil and pay your debts, and you

And your own sons can live on what is left.”

8 One day Elisha went to Shunem and

A well‑off woman there persuaded him

To stay and have a meal. Whenever he

Came by, he stopped to eat there. 9 She said to

Her husband, “I know that this man who often

Come our way is a holy man of God.

10 Let’s make a small room on the roof and put

In it a bed, chair, lamp, and table for

Him, then he can stay there whenever he

Comes to us.” 11 One day when Elisha came,

He went up to his room and lay down there.

12 He said to Gehazi, his own servant, “Call

The Shunammite,” so he called her, and she

Stood there before him, 13 and Elisha told

Him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble

For us, so now what can be done for you?

Can we speak to the king or army chief

On your behalf?’” She said, “I have a home

Among my people,” 14 and Elisha asked,

“What can be done for her?” Gehazi said,

“Well, she has no son and her husband’s old.”

Elisha said then, “Call her.” 15 He called her,

And she stood in the doorway. 16 “At about

This time next year,” Elisha said, “you’ll hold

A son within your arms.” “Oh no, my lord,”

She answered. “Don’t mislead your servant, man

Of God!” 17 The woman did get pregnant, and

The next year at about that same time she

Did bear a son, just as Elisha had

Told her; 18 the child grew, and one day he went

Out to his father, who was with the reapers.

19 “My head! My head!” he told his father. And

His father told a servant, “Carry him

In to his mother.” 20 After he had lifted

Him up and carried him in to his mother,

The boy sat on her lap >til noon, then died.

21 She went and placed him on the man of God’s

Own bed, then shut the door and left. 22 She called

Her husband, saying, “Send a servant and

A donkey to me so that I can go

Quickly down to the man of God and then

Return.” 23 “Why go to him today?” he asked.

“It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.” “It’s

All right,” she said. 24 She saddled up the donkey

And told her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down

For me unless I tell you,” 25 so she left

And reached the man of God beside Mount Carmel.

The man of God saw her far off and told

Gehazi his own servant, “Look! There is

The Shunammite! 26 Run out to meet her and

Ask her, ‘Are you all right? And is your husband

All right? Is your child all right?’” “Everything

Is fine,” she said, 27 but when she reached the man

Of God beside the mountain, she took hold

Of his feet. When Gehazi came across

To push her off, the man of God said, “Let

Her be! She is in bitter agony,

But God has hidden it from me and has

Not told me why.” 28 “Did I ask you to have

A son, my lord?” she said. “Did I not tell

You, ‘Do not raise my hopes’?” 29 Elisha told

Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,

And take my staff in hand and run, and if you

Meet anyone, do not greet him, and if

Somebody greets you, do not answer. Lay

My staff on the boy’s face,” 30 but the

  child’s mother

Remarked, “As surely as the LORD lives and

As you live, I will not leave you,” so he

Got up and followed her. 31 Gehazi went

Ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face,

But there was no response or sound. Gehazi

Went back to meet Elisha and told him,

“The boy has not awakened.” 32 Elisha

Came to the house, and when he did, there was

The boy, who lay on the couch, dead. 33 Elisha

Went in and shut the door upon the two

Of them and prayed to God, 34 then he got on

The bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth,

And eyes to eyes, and hands to hands. As he

Did stretch himself out on him, the boy’s body

Grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked

Back and forth in the room and then got on

The bed and stretched out on him once again.

The boy sneezed seven times and opened up

His eyes. 36 Elisha called Gehazi and

He said, “Go call the Shunammite.” He did,

And when she came, he said, “Now take your son.”

37 She entered, fell down at his feet and bowed

Down to the ground. She took her son and left.

38 Elisha went on back to Gilgal, and

There was a famine in that region. While

The company of prophets met with him,

He told his servant, “Put on the large pot

And cook some stew for these men.” 39 One of them

Went to the fields to gather herbs and found

A wild vine, and he gathered gourds from it

And filled the folds within his cloak. When he

Returned, he cut them up in the stew pot,

Although nobody knew what they were, 40 and

The stew was poured out for the men, but as

They started eating it, they cried, “O man

Of God, there’s death inside the pot!” And they

Could not eat it. 41 Elisha said, “Go get

Some flour.” He put it in the pot and said,

“Now serve it to the people to consume,”

And there was nothing harmful in the pot.

42 A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing

The man of God some twenty loaves of bread,

Barley bread baked from the first ripe grain, along

With some new grain heads. “Give it to the people

To eat,” Elisha said. 43 “How can I set

This in front of a hundred men?” his servant

Asked, but Elisha answered, “Give it to

The people to consume, for the LORD says:

‘They’ll eat and have some left,’” 44 then he set it

Before them, and they ate and had some left,

According to God’s word that’s always blessed.
