SECOND KINGS CHAPTER ELEVEN

SECOND KINGS CHAPTER ELEVEN

1 When Athaliah, Ahaziah’s mother,

Saw that her son was dead, she went out to

Decimate the whole royal family,

2 But Jehosheba, King Jehoram’s daughter

And Ahaziah’s sister, took out Joash,

Ahaziah’s son, and stole him away

From the midst of the royal princes, who

Would soon be murdered. She put him and his

Own nurse inside a bedroom to hide him

From Athaliah; so he was not killed.

3 He stayed concealed with his own nurse within

The temple of the LORD for six years while

Athaliah did rule the land, 4 and in

The seventh year Jehoiada sent for

Commanders of the units of a hundred,

The Carites and the guards and had them brought

To him right at the temple of the LORD.

He made a covenant with them and put

Them under oath at the LORD’s temple, then

He showed them the king’s son. 5 He ordered them

By saying, “You shall do this: You who are

In the three companies that go on duty

Upon the Sabbath–with a third of you

To guard the royal palace, 6 with a third

At the Sur Gate, and with a third right at

The gate behind the guard, who take turns guarding

The temple– 7 and you who are in the other

Two companies that normally go off

Sabbath duty shall guard the temple for

The king, 8 so set yourselves around the king,

Each one of you with weapons in his hand.

Anyone who comes near your ranks is to

Be put to death; stay near the king wherever

He goes.” 9 Commanders of the units of

A hundred did just as Jehoiada

The priest had said. Each one took his own men–

The ones beginning duty on the Sabbath

And those who had completed duty–and

Came to Jehoiada the priest, 10 then he

Gave the commanders spears and shields that had

Once been King David’s which were in  God’s temple.

11 The guards, each with a weapon in his hand,

Stationed themselves around the king–beside

The altar and the temple, from the south

Side to the north side of the temple, 12 then

Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and

He put the crown on him, and he presented

Him with a copy of the covenant

And called him king, and they anointed him,

And people clapped their hands and cried, “Long live

The king!” 13 When Athaliah heard the noise

The guards and people made, she went out to

The people at the temple of the LORD.

14 She looked and there the king was, standing by

The pillar, as the custom was. Beside

The king were officers and trumpeters,

And people of the land rejoiced and blew

Their trumpets. Athaliah tore her robes

And called out, “Treason! Treason!”  15 And the priest

            Jehoiada told the commanders of

The units of a hundred, who were over

The troops: “Bring her out here between the ranks

And put to sword the ones who follow her.”

Because the priest had said, “She must not be

Executed in the LORD’s temple,” 16 so

They seized her as she reached the place  where horses

Go in the palace grounds, and there she was

Executed. 17 Jehoiada then made

A covenant between the LORD and king

And people that they would be the LORD’s people.

He also made a covenant between

The king and people; 18 all the people of

The land went to Baal’s temple and they tore

It down. They smashed the altars and the idols

To pieces and put Mattan, Baal’s priest,

To death before the altars, then the priest

Jehoiada did post some guards right at

The temple of the LORD, 19 and took with him

Those who commanded hundreds, captains, guards

And people of the land. Together they

Brought down the king from the LORD’s temple and

Went in the palace, and they entered through

The gate of guards. The king then took his place

Upon the royal throne, 20 and people of

The land rejoiced, and the whole city was

At peace, for Athaliah was sword-slain

Right at the palace; 21 Joash was the age

Of seven years when he began to reign.
