December 28: “Miracles of Jesus” (11/12)

“I’m going fishing,” Peter said, and others
Said to him, “We’ll go with you, but they caught
Nothing, then Jesus stood on shore, not far
From them, and asked, “Have you caught some fish, friends?”

They did not know who he was. “Throw your net
On the boat’s right side for a catch galore.”
When they did, they could not haul in the net,
The number of fish was so large. “It is

The Lord,” said a disciple. Peter dressed
Himself, jumped in the water, swam to shore,
Then helped drag in the net (he broke a sweat),
With its one hundred fifty-three large fish,

And they had breakfast with the Lord, who showed
Himself to them for forty days and taught
About God’s kingdom, telling them to wait
For the Holy Spirit to baptize them

With power, then he led them on a road
Near Bethany, blessed those whom he had brought
By lifting hands, and he ascended straight
To heaven, hidden by a cloud, God’s gem.

December 28: “Dominion” by Day Williams

Day Williams created this graphic depiction of this date.

God said to fill the earth and take dominion
Over it, so men harnessed nature’s laws
With floating farms and coffee-powered cars,
The hoverboards and mines on asteroids,

Easy tattoo removal from the skin,
Transhuman tech, space kites, robots that draw,
Weather control and terraforming Mars,
Dyson spheres, penicillin, cyborgs, androids:

Man takes dominion over every breath,
Advances medicine to fight death’s grin,
Strengthens the people, healthier each day;
But no device can soften man’s hard heart.

Man can extend a life but can’t crush death
To bits, because no tool can wipe out sin,
As only Jesus’ blood takes sin away:
Man’s saved when he submits to God’s great art.
~Day Williams

1 Judah’s descendants were: Perez and Hezron,

Karmi and Hur and Shobal. 2 Reaiah

The son of Shobal fathered Jahath, and

Jahath fathered Ahumai and Lahad.

These were the clans of Zorathites. 3 These were

The sons of Etam: Jezreel, Ishma and

Idbash. Their sister was named Hazzelel-

Poni. 4 Penuel was the father of

Gedor, and Ezer fathered Hushah. These

Were Hur’s descendants, who was firstborn

               Of Ephrathah, who fathered Bethlehem.

5 Ashhur the father of Tekoa had

Two wives, named Naarah and Helah. 6 Now

Naarah bore him Ahuzzam and Hepher,

               Temeni and Haahashtari. These

Were Naarah’s descendants. 7 Helah’s sons

Were Zereth, Zohar, Ethnan, 8 also Koz,

Who fathered Hazzobebah as well as

Anub and clans of Aharhel the son

Of Harum. 9 Jabez was more honorable

Than his own brothers. Now his mother named

Him Jabez, saying, “I gave birth to him

In pain.” 10 And Jabez cried out to the God

Of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me

And grow my territory! Let your hand

Be with me, and keep me from harm so I’ll

Be free from pain.” God granted his request.

11 Now Kelub, Shuhah’s brother, fathered Mehir,

Who fathered Eshton. 12 Eshton fathered Beth

               Rapha, Paseah and Tehinnah, who

Fathered Ir Nahash. These were Rekah’s men.

13 Othniel and Seraiah were the sons

Of Kenaz. Sons of Othniel were Hathath

And Meonothai. 14 Meonothai was

Ophrah’s father. Seraiah was the father

Of Joab, father of Ge Harashim,

Which was called this because its people were

Skilled artisans. 15 Jephunneth’s son was Caleb,

Whose sons were: Iru, Elah, Naam. Elah’s

Son was named Kenaz. 16 Jehallelel’s sons:

               Ziph, Ziphah, Tiria and Asarel.

17 The sons of Ezrah: Jether, Mered, Epher

And Jalon. One of Mered’s wives gave birth

To Miriam and Shammai and Ishbah

Who fathered Eshtemoa. 18 (Now his wife

From Judah’s tribe gave birth to Jered, father

Of Gedor, Heber (Soko’s father), and

               Jekuthiel, Zanoah’s father.) These

Were children of Bithiah, Pharaoh’s daughter,

Whom Mered married. 19 Now Hodiah’s wife,

Sister of Naham, had these sons: The father

Of Keilah the Garmite, as well as

               Eshtemoa the Maakathite. 20 Sons

               Of Shimon: Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-Hanan

And Tilon. Ishi’s heirs were: Zoheth and

               Ben-Zoheth. 21 Sons of Shelah, Judah’s son:

Er, Lekah’s father, Laadah the father

Of Mareshah and clans of linen workers

At Beth Ashbea, 22 Jokim, and the men

Of Kozeba, and Joash and Saraph,

Who ruled in Moab and Jashubi Lehem.

(These records are from ancient times.) 23 They were

The potters who resided at Netaim

And Gederah; there they stayed, working for

The king. 24 Now Simeon’s heirs: Nemuel,

Jamin, Jarib, Zerah and Shaul; 25 and Shallum

Was Shaul’s son, Mibsam his own son and Mishma

His son. 26 And Mishma’s heirs were: Hammuel

His son, and Zakkur his own son and his

Son Shimei. 27 Now Shimei in all

Had sixteen sons plus had six daughters, but

His brothers had few children, so their clan

Did not become as numerous as people

Of Judah. 28 Now they lived in Beersheba,

Moladah, Hazar Shual, 29 Bilhah, Ezem,

Tolad, 30 Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag, 31 Beth

               Markaboth, Hazar Susim, Beth Biri

And Shaaraim. These were their towns ‘til

The reign of David. 32 Their surrounding towns

Were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Token and

Ashan—five towns— 33 and all the villages

Around these towns as far as Baalath.

These were their settlements, and they did keep

               A genealogical register.

34 Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah, Amaziah’s

Son, 35 Joel, Jehu son of Joshibiah,

               Son of Seraiah, Asiel’s son,

36 Elioenai, Jaakobah and

               Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, and

               Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah,

37 And Ziza son of Shiphi, son of Allon,

Son of Jedaiah, the son of Shimri,

The son of Shemaiah. 38 The men listed

Above by name were leaders of their clans.

Their families grew greatly, 39 and they went

To Gedor’s outskirts to the valley’s east

To seek good pastures for their flocks. 40 They found

Rich pasture, and the land was spacious, peaceful

And quiet. Formerly some Hamites had

Lived there. 41 The men whose names were listed came

In days of Hezekiah Judah’s king.

They struck the Hamites in their dwellings and

Also the Meunites there and completely

Destroyed them, and to this day that is clear.

Then in their place they settled, for there was

Good pasture for their flocks. 42 Five hundred of

               These Simeonites, led by Pelatiah,

               Neariah, Rephaiah and Uzziel,

Ishi’s sons, raided Seir’s hills. 43 They killed

Amalekites who had escaped, and they

Have lived there from that time down to this day.
