Of Azariah, Azariah fathered

Johanan, 10 and Johanan was the father

As priest within the temple Solomon

Constructed in Jerusalem), 11 and then

               Azariah was Amariah’s father,

Amariah, Ahitub’s father, then

12 Ahitub, Zadok’s father, Zadok, father

Deported when the LORD sent Judah and

Jerusalem to exile by the hand

Of Nebuchadnezzar. 16 The sons of Levi

Were Gershon, Kohath and Merari. 17 These

Are names of Gershon’s sons: Shimei and

Libni, 18 and Kohath’s sons were Amram, Izhar,

Hebron and Uzziel. 19 Merari’s sons

Mahli and Mushi. These are Levite clans

Listed according to their fathers: 20 Of

Gershon: Libni his son, and Jahath his

Son, Zimmah his son, 21 Joah his son, Iddo

His son, and Zerah his son, and his son

Jeatherai, 22 and heirs of Kohath were:

Amminadab his son, and Korah his

Son, Assir his son, 23 Elkanah his son,

Ebiasaph his son, and Assir his

Son, 24 Tahath his son, Uriel his son,

His son, 27 Eliab his own son, Jeroham

His son, Elkanah his son; 28 Samuel

His son. The sons of Samuel were Joel

29 Merari’s heirs were: Mahli, Libni his

Son, 30 Shimei his own son, Uzzah his

Son, Shimea his son, Haggiah his

Son and Asaiah his son. 31 These are men

King David put in charge of music in

The LORD’s house once the ark came there to stay.

32 They ministered with music in front of

The tabernacle, meeting tent, ‘til King

Solomon built the temple of the LORD

Inside Jerusalem, and they performed

Their duties by the regulations set

For them. 33 Here are the men who served, together

With their sons: From the Kohathites came Heman,

Musician, son of Joel, who was son

Of Samuel, 34 son of Elkanah, who was

Son of Jeroham, son of Eliel,

The son of Toah, 35 son of Zuph, 36 the son

Of Elkanah, the son of Mahath, who

Was the son of Amasai, son of

Elkanah, son of Joel, who was son

               Of Azariah, son of Zephaniah,

37 The son of Tahath, son of Assir, son

Of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, 38 son

Of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi,

The son of Israel; 39 and Heman’s aide

Asaph, who served him at his right hand: Asaph

The son of Berekiah, who was son

Of Shimea, 40 the son of Michael, son

               Of Baaseiah, son of Malkijah,

41 The son of Ethni, son of Zerah, son

Of Adaiah, 42 son of Ethan, son

Of Zimmah, son of Shimei, 43 the son

               Of Jahath, son of Gershon, son of Levi;

44 And from their aides, the Merarites, at his

Left hand: Ethan son of Kishi, son

Of Abdi, son of Malluk, 45 who was son

Son of Hilkiah, 46 son of Amzi, son

Of Bani, son of Shemer, 47 son of Mahli,

The son of Mushi, the son of Merari,

The son of Levi. 48 Now their fellow Levites

Undertook all the other duties of

The tabernacle, house of God, 49 but Aaron

And his descendants were the ones who made

The offerings upon the altar of

Burnt offering and on the incense altar

As to the rituals performed within

The Holiest Place, where they did atone

For Israel, as to all Moses, servant

Of God, commanded. 50 These heirs of Aaron:

               Eleazar his son, and Phinehas

His son, and Abishua his son, 51 Bukki

His son, and Uzzi his son, Zerahiah

His son, 52 Meraioth his son, Amariah

His son, Ahitub his son, 53 Zadok his

Son and Ahimaaz his son. 54 These were

               Locations of their settlements allotted

As their own territory (for they were

Assigned to Aaron’s heirs who came out of

The Kohathite clan, as the first lot was

For them): 55 They were provided Hebron in

               Judah with its surrounding pasturelands,

56 But fields and villages around the city

Were given to Jephunneh’s son, named Caleb.

57 So Aaron’s heirs were given Hebron (which

Became a refuge city), Libnah, Jattir,

Eshtemoa, and 58 Hilen, Debir, 59 Ashan,

Juttah and Beth Shemesh, together with

Their pastures. 60 From the tribe of Benjamin

They were provided Gibeon and Geba,

               Alemeth, Anathoth, with pasturelands.

The total count of towns distributed

Among the clans of Kohathites came up

To thirteen, 61 and the rest of Kohath’s heirs

Received ten towns out of the clans of half

Manasseh’s tribe. 62 The heirs of Gershon, clan

By clan, were given thirteen towns out of

The tribes of Issachar and Asher and

Naphtali, and from part of Manasseh’s

Tribe, that is, part that is in Bashan. 63 Heirs,

Clan by clan, of Merari, were allotted

Twelve towns out of the tribes of Reuben, Gad

And Zebulun. 64 So Israelites gave Levites

These towns and pasturelands. 65 Out of the tribes

Of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin

They did allot the towns as named above.

66 Some clans of Kohathites were given as

Their territory towns out of the tribe

Of Ephraim. 67 In hills of Ephraim

They were assigned a refuge city, Schechem,

And Gezer, 68 Jokmeam, Beth Horon, 69 A-

Ijalon and Gath Rimmon, along with

               Their pasturelands. 70 And from Manasseh’s half-tribe

The Israelites gave Aner and Bileam,

Together with their pasturelands, to all

The rest of Kohathite clans. 71 Gershonites

Received the following: Out of the clan

Of the Manasseh half-tribe, they received

               Golan in Bashan—Ashtaroth, too—with

Their pastures, 72 from the tribe of Issachar

They did gain Kedesh, Daberath 73 and Ramoth

               And Anem, along with their pasturelands;

74 From Asher’s tribe they picked up Mashal, Abdon,

               75 Hukok and Rehob, with their pasturelands;

76 And from the tribe of Naphtali they gained

Kedesh in Galilee and Hammon and

               Kiriathaim, with their pasturelands.

77 The Merarites (the Levites who were left)

Received the following: Out of the tribe

Of Zebulun they gained Jokneam, Kartah,

Rimmono, Tabor, with their pasturelands;

78 From Reuben’s tribe across the Jordan east

Of Jericho they took in Bezer in

The wilderness, and Jahzah, 79 Kedemoth

And Mephaath, along with pasturelands;

80 And from the tribe of Gad they took in Ramoth

In Gilead, Mahanaim and 81 Heshbon

And Jazer, with their pasturelands so fresh.

Sidewalks smeared with human excrement,
Scattered needles, debris, and homeless tents
Panhandlers, hustlers, dealers, and cons . . .
Fog covers the mess only so long

Down in Peepoopville
Where tourists walk ‘round swill
Down in Peepoopville
Running this place takes skill

The flower children, they’ve long since faded
Nobody likes a yellow-brown parade
Along the City’s stinking promenade
So progressive that it’s retrograde

Down in Peepoppville
The leaders there, they lack the skill

FIRST CHRONICLES CHAPTER FIVE

FIRST CHRONICLES CHAPTER FIVE

1 The sons of Reuben, who was firstborn in

Israel (he was firstborn, but when he

Defiled his father’s marriage bed, his rights

As firstborn went to sons of Joseph son

Of Israel; so he could not be listed

               In the official genealogy

According to his birthright, 2 and though Judah

Was strongest of his brothers and a ruler

Came from him, firstborn rights belonged to Joseph)—

3 The sons of Reuben, I say, firstborn of

               Israel: Hanok, Pallu, Hezron, Karmi.

               4 Joel’s descendants: Shemaiah his

Son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, 5 Micah

His son, Reaiah his son, Baal his

Own son, 6 and Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-

Pileser, the Assyrian king, took into

Exile. Beerah was a leader of

The Reubenites. 7 Their relatives by clans,

Listed by genealogical records:

The chief, Jeiel, Zechariah, 8 and

Bela the son of Azaz, Shema’s son,

And Joel’s son. They settled in the place

From Aroer to Nebo and to Baal

Meon, 9 and to the east they occupied

The land up to the desert edge extending

To the Euphrates River, for their livestock

Had multiplied in Gilead. 10 Now during

Saul’s reign they waged a war against the Hagrites,

Whom they defeated, and they occupied

The Hagrites’ dwellings all through the whole region

East of Gilead, 11 and the Gadites lived

Beside them inside Bashan, as far as

Salekah: 12 Joel was the chief, and Shapham

The second, then Janai as well as

Shaphat, in Bashan, 13 and their relatives,

By families, were: Michael and Meshullam,

Sheba, Jorai, Jakan, Zia and

Eber—so seven total. 14 These were sons

Of Abihail son of Huri, son

Of Jaroah, the son of Gilead,

The son of Michael, son of Jeshishai,

The son of Jahdo, and the son of Buz.

15 Ahi the son of Abdiel, the son

Of Guni, was the family head. 16 The Gadites

               Resided inside Gilead, in Bashan

And villages around it, and on all

The pasturelands of Sharon as far as

They went. 17 All these were entered in the records

Of genealogy in reigns of Jotham

King of Judah and Jeroboam king

Of Israel. 18 The Reubenites, the Gadites

And the Manasseh half-tribe had men ready

               For military service–forty-four

Thousand and seven hundred sixty men–

Able-bodied men who could handle shield

And sword, who could employ a bow, and who

Were trained for battle, 19 who waged war against

The Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, also Nodab.

20 They were assisted fighting them, and God

Delivered all the Hagrites and their allies

Into their hands, because they called to him

In the midst of the battle, and he answered

Their prayers, because they trusted him. 21 They seized

The Hagrites’ livestock–fifty thousand camels,

Two hundred fifty thousand sheep and two

Thousand donkeys. They also took one hundred

Thousand people captive, 22 and many others

Fell slain, because the battle was the LORD’s.

They occupied the land until the exile.

23 The people of Manasseh’s half-tribe were

Numerous, and they settled in the land

From Bashan to Baal Hermon, that is,

To Senir (or, Mount Hermon). 24 These were heads

Of their own families: Epher, Ishi, Eliel,

               Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah

And Jahdiel. They were brave warriors, men

Of fame, and leaders of their families.

               25 But to their fathers’ God they were unfaithful;

They whored themselves to gods of peoples of

The land, whom God destroyed before them, 26 so

The God of Israel stirred up the spirit

Of Pul king of Assyria (that is,

               Tiglath-Pileser the Assyrian king),

Who took the Reubenites, the Gadites and

Manesseh’s half-tribe into exile. He

Took them to Halah, Habor, Hara’s way,

And Gozan River, where they are today.
