January 8: Poets

January 8

I’m living so far beyond my income that we may almost be said to be living apart.

~William Cowper (1731–1800), English poet and hymnodist

Modern poets talk against business, poor things, but all of us write for money. Beginners are subjected to trial by market.

~Robert Lee Frost (1874–1963), American poet who received four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry.

A bank is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it begins to rain.

January 8: Messiah

January 8

Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince will be seven weeks and 62 weeks. It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat, but in difficult times.
–Daniel 9:25

And Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, who gave birth to Jesus who is called the Messiah.
–Matthew 1:16

So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born.
–Matthew 2:4

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah“(that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus.
–John 1:40

1 Once David had constructed buildings for

Himself in David’s City, he prepared

A place to put the ark of God and pitched

A tent for it, 2 then David said, “None but

Levites may bear the ark of God, because

The LORD chose them to bear the ark of God

And minister before him evermore.”

3 David assembled Israel inside

Jerusalem to bring the ark of God

Up to the place he had prepared for it.

4 He called together the descendants of

Aaron and Levites: 5 From descendants of

Kohath, the leader Uriel, and one

Hundred and twenty relatives; 6 out of

Descendants of Merari, Asaiah

The leader and two hundred twenty of

His relatives; 7 from the descendants of

Gershon, the leader Joel and one hundred

And thirty relatives; 8 Elizaphan’s

Descendants added leader Shemaiah

And his two hundred relatives; 9 out of

Hebron’s descendants, Eliel the leader

And eighty relatives; 10 from the descendants

Of Uzziel, Amminadab the leader

And his one hundred and twelve relatives.

11 Then David summoned priests Abiathar

And Zadok, and the Levites Uriel,

Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, El-

Iel, Amminadab, 12 and said to them,

 “You are the heads of Levite families;

You and your fellow Levites shall make

Yourselves holy and bring the ark of God,

The God of Israel, up to the place

I have prepared for it. 13 It was because

You Levites did not bring it the first time

The LORD our God broke out against us in

His anger. We did not ask him how we

Should do it,” 14 so the priests and Levites did

Go consecrate themselves to bring the ark,

Ark of the LORD, the God of Israel,

15 And  Levites bore the ark of God with poles

Upon their shoulders, just as Moses had

Commanded in accord with the LORD’s word,

16 And David told the Levite leaders to

David told the leaders of the Levites to

Appoint their fellow Levites as musicians

To make a joyful sound with musical

Instruments: with lyres, harps and cymbals, 17 so

Levites appointed Heman, Joel’s son,

Out of his relatives, and Asaph son

Of Berekiah; and out of their own

Relatives, Merarites, came Ethan son

Of Kushaiah; 18 and with them came their

Relatives who did rank next: Zechariah,

Jaaziel and Shemiramoth, Jehiel,

Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Ma-

Aseiah, Mattithiah, Eliph-

Elehu, Mikneiah, Obed-Edom

And Jeiel,the gatekeepers. 19 Musicians

Heman, Asaph and Ethan were to sound

Bronze cymbals; 20 Zechariah, Jaaziel,

Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, E-

Liab, Maaseiah and Benaiah

Would play the lyres by alamoth, 21 and Mat-

               Tithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikne-

Iah, Obed-Edom, Jeiel and

Azaziah would play the harps, directing

By sheminith. 22 Kenaniah the head

Levite directed singing; that was his

Responsibility because he was

So skillful at it. 23 Berekiah and

Elkanah were ark doorkeepers. 24 Sheb-

Aniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Am-

               Asai, Zechariah, Benaiah

And Eliezer, priests, would blow the trumpets

Before the ark of God. Jehiah and

Obed-Edom were to be doorkeepers

For the ark, too, 25 so David and the leaders

Of Israel and the commanders of

The units of a thousand went to bring

The ark of covenant of God up from

The house of Obed-Edom, with rejoicing.

26 Because the Lord had helped the Levites who

Were carrying the ark of covenant

Of the Lord, seven bulls and seven rams

Were sacrificed. 27 Now David clothed himself

In a fine linen robe, as did the Levites

Who bore the ark, and the musicians, and

Kenaniah, who oversaw the singing

Of choirs. Now David wore a linen ephod,

Too, 28 so all Israel brought up the ark

Of covenant of God with shouts, with sounding

Of the rams’ horns and trumpets, and of cymbals,

By playing lyres and harps, 29 and as the ark

Of covenant of God was entering

David’s City, Michal, Saul’s daughter, watched

It from a window. When she saw King David,

Who danced and celebrated, she despised

Him in her heart, which was not very wise.
