Light of Day: Poems from Isaiah

Isaiah

(Isaiah 1:16-17,

1 John 1:7)

Stop Doing Wrong

Stop doing wrong,

Learn to do right,

Seek justice and

Walk in the light.

(Isaiah 7:9)

Stand Firm or Fall

You must stand firm,

Stand firm or fall;

If not, you will

Not stand at all.

(Isaiah 9:2)

In Shadow Land

On those who live

In shadow land

A light has dawned

And shown God’s hand.

(Isaiah 14:11)

Your Pomp

Your pomp has gone

Down to the grave;

The maggots and

The worms won’t save.

(Isaiah 14:12-13)

O Morning Star

O morning star,

You’ve been cast down;

You rose so high,

O son of dawn.

(Isaiah 14:16)

They Ponder Your Fate

Those who see you

Ponder your fate:
“Is this the man

Who made earth shake?”

(Isaiah 21:6)

Go, Set a Watchman

God said, “Go, set

A watchman, let

Him say if he

Has seen a threat.”

(Isaiah 21:10)

Crushed People

My people, crushed

On threshing floors,

I say what I’ve

Heard from the Lord.

(Isaiah 32:8)

The Noble Man

The noble man

Makes noble plans;

By noble deeds

Will that man stand.

(Isaiah 33:7-9)

Brave Men Cry Aloud

Their brave men cry

Aloud in streets;

The country mourns;

Peace envoys weep.

(Isaiah 35:7)

The Burning Sand

The burning sand

Becomes a pool

As men obey

The Golden Rule.

“The grass withers and the flowers fade,

but the word of our God stands forever.”

~Isaiah 40:8 (NLT)

Forever Will It Stand

Governments come,

Governments go;

The Word of God

Withstands each blow.

(Isaiah 40:31)

Wait on the Lord

Wait on the Lord

And find new strength;

You’ll fly and run

The entire length.

(Isaiah 41:10)

Don’t Be Afraid

Don’t be afraid:

I am with you;

I’ll come to aid;

I’ll see you through.

(Isaiah 41:21-23)

When I am Tired

When I am tired,

Tired to the bone,

My soul finds rest

In God alone.

(Isaiah 41:22)

Bring Idols In

Bring idols in;

Let them be bold

And tell us what

The future holds.

(Isaiah 41:22)

If Idols

If idols are

Not deaf and dumb,

Declare to us

The things to come.

(Isaiah 42:2, 10)

He Will Not Shout

He will not shout

Or call or raise

His voice in streets—

He’ll teach God’s ways.

(Isaiah 43:18)

Former Things

The former things

Won’t be recalled:

They will not come

To mind at all.

(Isaiah 43:18-19,

Luke 9:62, John 15:4-7,

1 Cor. 2:2)

Take Time to Know

Take time to know

Christ crucified:

Let baggage go;

In Him abide.

(Isaiah 46:3-4)

I Will Save

I’ve borne you, for

You I have made;

I’ll carry you

And I will save.

(Isaiah 51:1)

Look to the Rock

Look to the rock

You were hewn from,

To pit holes from

Which you were dug.

(Isaiah 52:7,

Romans 10:15)

How Beautiful

How lovely, those

Who bring good words–

How beautiful

When God is heard.

(Isaiah 52:11)

Depart, Depart

Depart, depart

Go out from there

Come out, be pure:

The Lord God cares.

(Isaiah 53:3)

The Son of Man

He never made

The prime-time news

Or write-ups in

World Who’s Whos.

(Isaiah 53:5, Hebrews 4:14)

Punishment

The punishment

That brought us peace

Was put on Him,

Our great high priest.

(Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24)

Healed by Stripes

You need not leave,

Your heart so black;

We’re healed by stripes

On Jesus’ back.

(Isaiah 53:6)

Gone Astray

We all like sheep

Have gone astray;

Each one has turned

To his own way.

(Isaiah 57:2)

The Wicked

The wicked are

Like tossing seas

Which cannot rest

And catch debris.

(Isaiah 57:20, Ps. 5:12,

112:2, Prov. 10:6, 7)

Wicked Men

The wicked men

Will have no rest

While righteous men

Are ever blessed.

(Isaiah 58:11, Psalm 77:10-12)

He’ll Meet Your Needs

In sun-scorched land

He’ll meet your needs;

I will recall

His awesome deeds.

(Isaiah 61:5)

Strangers Shall Stand

Strangers shall stand

And feed your flocks,

For you’ve relied

On God the Rock.

(Isaiah 64:6)

Your Righteousness

Your righteousness,

Like filthy clothes,

Will not save your

Eternal soul.

(Isaiah 64:6,

Eph. 2:8-9)

Saved by Grace

Your righteous deeds

Are filthy rags;

You’re saved by grace:

You cannot brag.

(Isaiah 65:17)

In Freedom

In freedom we

Will see Christ reign:

No tragedies,

No tears, no pain.
