The Cherry Princess

The Cherry Princess

The cherry princess sits inside her carriage
And tosses the proposal for a marriage;
Lawyers in the parlor whisper by the stairs;
Engineers build bridges for her cares

To carry them over the swollen seas
To foreign princes begging on their knees,
Who plead for one long look from her—
So sad, their failures are assured.

The king has bought more northern lands
Where he’ll send her with a merry band
To occupy her days with hornpipe tunes
As she deciphers ancient runes

Beside a beach where waves wash rocks
And chimes resound from the village clock.

To a Friend

To a Friend
One song slow, one fast
So much time has passed
Go forward with guitar and voice
Or let it be, as is your choice.

The Land of Never

The Land of Never

Have you ever been so clever
You visited the Land of Never?
“Never will I eat the foods that make me fat,
Never will I say those awful words
Like Heckedy Schmekedy drat,”
Or in a moment of practiced pique
When your bottom’s fallen in the creek:
“Never ever will I do that again,
No horse could drag me through that glen,”
Or when your friend and you
have a falling out,
A spat where you cross your arms and shout,
“That’s it, never will I be your friend!
Never! Never! Never! The End!” . . .
But
 it’s not the end,
  now is it?
You’ll eat the pie despite the pounds and zits,
You’ll say some awful things
Because they have a righteous ring,
You’ll take that trip to somewhere far away,
Smiling as you wipe off spray,
You’ll call your friends
And make amends,
You’ll say, “Did I say ‛Never’”?
For me that’s far too clever.
Let’s take a walk
Around the block,
Pluck a dandelion on the fly,
Pick out Orion in the sky.
Whatever we may endeavor
Let’s steer clear
Of the Land of Never.”

TobyMac – The Elements (Official Music Video)

Every one of us is facing the elements… things that are trying to keep us from being who we want to be or who we are called to be… the friend we want to be, the sibling we want to be, the spouse we want to be, the parent we want to be, the person of community we want to be, and ultimately the believer we want to be… Facing these elements that are trying to stumble us or change our course is what we must be aware of, what we must fight daily. This crazy world comes hard against us. It makes us want to look after ourselves, not others. It makes us want to retreat, not step into calling. We have to wake up every morning with a steadfast resolve to fight the elements.

SECOND CHRONICLES CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

SECOND CHRONICLES CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

1 After Ahaziah’s son Joash had

Hidden inside the temple for six years,

Jehoiada the priest knew something had

To be accomplished, so he made sure he

Had several army officers behind

Him; they were Azariah, Jeroham’s

Son, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Obed’s

Son Azariah, Maaseiah son

Of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son

Of Zichri; 2 these five men went to the towns

In Judah and assembled Levites and

Clan leaders, who went to Jerusalem

3 And gathered at the temple, where they were

In one accord that they’d help Joash, and

Jehoiada said to them: Joash will

Be our next king, for long ago the Lord

Promised that one of David’s seed would always

Be king. 4 Here’s what we’ll do: Three groups of  priests

And Levites will be on guard duty on

The Sabbath—one group will guard temple gates,

5 And one will guard the palace, and the other

Will guard Foundation Gate; the rest of you

Will stand guard in the temple courtyards. 6 Only

The priests and Levites who are there on duty

Will be the one to go inside the temple,

For they will be the only ones who have

Gone through the ritual to make themselves

Clean and acceptable; the others must

Stay outside in the courtyards, as the Lord

Has ordered, 7 and you Levites must protect

King Joash: Don’t let him out of your sight!

Keep swords on hand to slaughter anyone

Who comes into the temple. 8 Levites and

Judeans followed Jehoiada’s orders.

The guards who went off duty weren’t allowed

To go home, and so each commander had

All of his guards available—those going

Off duty as well as those coming on

Duty; 9 Jehoiada went in the temple

And brought out swords and shields that had been King

David’s, and he gave them to the commanders.

10 They gave guards weapons, and Jehoiada

Made sure the guards took their positions ‘round

The temple and the altar to protect

The king on every side. 11 Jehoiada

And sons brought Joash out and placed the crown

Upon his head and gave to him a copy

Of strategy to rule the nation, then

Some olive oil was poured upon his head

To show that he was king now, and the crowd

Cheered and exclaimed, “Long live the king!”

12 And when

Queen Athaliah heard how the crowd cheered

For Joash, she went up to the temple,

13 Where she saw Joash standing by one of

The columns near the entrance, which was where

The king stood normally.  Commanders and

The trumpet players stood beside him, and

Musicians played their instruments and led

The people as they celebrated and

Blew trumpets. Athaliah tore her clothes

In anger, shouting, “You betrayed me, traitors!”

14 And right away, Jehoiada said to

Army commanders, “Do not kill her near

God’s temple. Take her out before the troops,

And be sure to kill all of her followers!”

15 She tried to flee, but the commanders caught

And killed her near the gate where horses are

Led in the palace, 16 then Jehoiada

Requested that King Joash and the people

Join him in being faithful to the Lord,

And they agreed, 17 then rushed up to the temple

Of the god Baal and tore it down, and smashed

The altars and the idols and killed Mattan

The priest of Baal in front of the altars. 18

Jehoiada assigned the priests and Levites

Their duties at the temple, just as David

Had done; they were in charge of offering

Sacrifices to God according to

The Law of Moses, and had duties to

Lead celebrations with their singing. 19 King

Jehoiada commanded guards beside

The temple gates to keep out anyone

Unclean; 20 At last, Jehoiada called in

Army commanders, Judah’s most important

Citizens , and the government officials.

The crowd did follow them as they led Joash

Out of the temple, through the Upper Gate,

And in the palace, where he took his place

As Judah’s king; 21 All celebrated, for

Athaliah had been assassinated;

Jerusalem had peace then from that date.

Poems from “Light of Day”

You’ve Won
Great Victories
God gives his king
Great victories
And heals the sick
From their disease.

In Freedom
In freedom we
Will see Christ reign
No tragedies,
No tears, no pain.

That All Be Saved
Though some will drown
Beneath their waves,
The Savior came
That all be saved.

Though some will drown
Beneath their waves,
The Savior came
That all be saved.
Lost Desire

You’ve lost desire

For Spirit fire;

Let Him love you

And take you higher.

Bear the Cross

You have to bear

The cross each day,

Stay true to God,

And keep His way.

God’s Call

I hear God’s call;

There I must go;

What will befall,

I do not know.
