171.
The less you know about the future the better off you are.
~Philip K. Dick, The World Jones Made (1956)

172.
Suddenly the future was not the simple blueprint it had been until now, but seemed like some frenzied living thing that possessed a will independent of the present.

Solomon’s Prayer

Lord, make me wise;
Teach me of right

EZRA CHAPTER THREE

EZRA CHAPTER THREE

1 Now when the seventh month arrived and all

The Israelites had settled in their towns,

The people gathered in Jerusalem

As one, 2 then Joshua son of Jozadak,

His fellow priests and Zerubbabel son

Of Shealtiel and his associates

Began to build the altar of the God

Of Israel to sacrifice on it

Burnt offerings by what is written in

The Law of Moses man of God. 3 Despite

Their fear of peoples living around them,

They built the altar on its base and on

It sacrificed burnt offerings to God,

The morning and the evening sacrifices.

4 They read the written word and celebrated

The Festival of Tabernacles with

The mandatory number of the burnt

Offerings set for each day. 5 After that,

They gave the regular burnt offerings,

The New Moon sacrifices as well as

The sacrifices for appointed sacred feasts

Of God, as well as those brought in to be

The freewill offerings to God, 6 and on

The first day of the seventh month

   they started

To offer the burnt offerings to God,

Though the foundation of God’s temple had

Not yet been laid. 7 Then they gave

   money to

The masons and the carpenters, and they gave

Food, drink, and olive oil to people of

Sidon and Tyre, so that they would bring up

The cedar logs by sea from Lebanon

To Joppa, the king of Persia, Cyrus,

Had authorized, 8 and in the second month

Within the second year succeeding their

Return to God’s house in Jerusalem,

Zerubbabel (Shealtiel’s son), Joshua

The son of Jozadak and the remainder

Of people (priests and Levites and all who

Had come back from the captivity to

Jerusalem) began the work, and they

Appointed Levites twenty years old and

Older to supervise construction of

God’s house 9 while Joshua and his sons

    and brothers

And Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of

Hodaviah) and Henadad’s sons and

Their sons and brothers—Levites—joined together

To supervise the workers on God’s house.

10 When builders laid the groundwork

   for  God’s temple,

The priests in vestments and with trumpets,

   and Levites

(The sons of Asaph) with their

   cymbals, took

Their spots to praise the Lord, as

   was prescribed

By David king of Israel. 11 With praise

And thanksgiving they sang to God:

   “He’s good;

His love toward Israel endures forever,”

And all the people shouted praise to God,

For the foundation of God’s house was laid.

12 But many of the older priests and Levites

And family heads, the ones who had observed

The former temple, wept aloud when they

Saw that this temple’s base was being laid,

While many others shouted joyfully.

13 No one could tell the difference between

The shouts of joy and weeping, for

   the crowd

Was heard when far away, they were so loud.
