He Will Sustain

(2 Kings 4:1-36)
He Will Sustain

You’re out of oil,
Your boy’s in pain;
Give Him your cares;
He will sustain.

EZRA CHAPTER FIVE

EZRA CHAPTER FIVE

1 Now the prophet Haggai and Zechariah

The prophet, who was from the Iddo line,

Prophesied to the Jews in Judah and

Jerusalem in Israel’s God’s name,

The God who was above them. 2 Zerubbabel

The son of Shealtiel and Joshua son

Of Jozadak began to rebuild God’s

House in Jerusalem. God’s prophets were

With them, supporting them.

   3 Then Tattenai,

The governor of Trans-Euphrates, and

Shethar-Bozenai and their allies went

To them and asked, “Who authorized you to

Rebuild this temple and to finish it?”

4 They also asked, “What are the names

   of those

Who build this building?” 5 But their

   God’s eye watched

Over the Jewish elders, and they were

Not stopped until their adversaries could

Send a report to Darius and they

Could read his written answer, 6 and this is

A copy of the letter Tattenai,

Governor of the Trans-Euphrates, and

Shethar-Bozenai and their colleagues, who

Are the officials of the Trans-Euphrates,

Sent to King Darius. 7 This is what their

Report said: To King Darius: Please take

Our cordial greetings. 8 We would have the king

Know we went to the Judah district, to

The great God’s temple, and the people are

Building it with large stones and placing

   the timbers

In walls. They work with diligence

   and make

Quick progress under their direction. 9 We

Asked elders, “Who has authorized you to

Rebuild this temple and to finish it?”

10 We also asked them for their names, so that

We could write down their leaders’

   names for your

Information. 11 This is what they told us:

“We serve the God of earth and heaven, and

We are here to rebuild the temple that

Was built some time ago, that a great king

Of Israel had built and finished. 12 But

Because our fathers angered heaven’s God,

He handed them to Nebuchadnezzar,

Chaldean king of Babylon, who took

This temple down and exiled people to

Babylon, 13 but in the first year of Cyrus

The king of Babylon, King Cyrus sent

Out a decree that we rebuild this house

Of God. 14 He even took out of the temple

In Babylon the gold and silver items

Out of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar

Took from the temple in Jerusalem

And carried to the Babylonian

Temple, and then King Cyrus gave them to

Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed to

Be governor, 15 and he told him, ‘Take these

Articles; go deposit them inside

The temple in Jerusalem; rebuild

God’s house on its site,’ 16 So this Sheshbazzar

Came and he laid foundations of

   God’s house

Inside Jerusalem. From then to now

We have been building it but it is not

Yet finished.” 17 Now if it will please

   the king,

Command a search be made in

   royal archives

Of Babylon to find out if King Cyrus

Did in fact issue a decree that they

          Rebuild God’s house within Jerusalem,

Then let the king tell us what he’s determined.
