From in a Bush

(Exodus 3:1-10)
From in a Bush

From in a bush
God called His man
To lead slaves to
The Promised Land.

At the Gates

At the Gates

Lift up your hands in praise
At the gates of the King
And lay at Jesus’ feet
The offerings you bring.

May your works survive the fire,
May crowns be on your head,
May your name be in the Book
When Heaven’s words are read.

May you sing with your heart
While kneeling at His feet.
May love burn within you,
And may your songs be sweet.

Job to the Lord

Job to the Lord

I’ve seen you, Lord, whose plans succeed,
You, Lord, who can perform all deeds.
The sight of you makes me despise
The Self that I had praised and prized.
My ignorance is evident–
In dust and ashes I repent.

1 Sanballat, Geshem, and Tobiah, and

Our other enemies did learn that I

Had thoroughly rebuilt the wall, and all

I lacked was hanging doors within the gates,

2 Then Sanballat and Geshem

   sent a message,

And asked if I would meet with them in one

Of Ono Valley’s villages; I knew

They planned to harm me in some way,

   3 so I

Sent messengers to tell them this: “My work

Is too important to stop now and go

There, so I can’t afford to slow the work

Down just to meet with you,” 4 and

   four times they

Invited me, but each time I refused

To go, 5 and in the end, Sanballat sent

Me an official with an unsealed letter,

6 Which said: A rumor’s going ‘round among

The nations that you and the other Jews

Have started to rebuild the wall and plan

Rebellion, for you want to be their king,

And Geshem says it’s true! 7 You even have

Some prophets in Jerusalem who claim

You’re now the king of Judah, and you know

The Persian king will hear about this, so

Let’s meet and talk it over, 8 so I sent

A message back to Sanballat, that said,

“No part of this is true! You’ve made it up.”

9 Our enemies have tried to frighten us

And keep us from our work, but I asked God

To give me strength. 10 One day I

   went to visit

Shemaiah, who was looking very worried,

Who said, “Let’s hurry to the holy place

Inside the temple and we’ll hide there; we

Will lock the temple doors, because

   your foes

Have planned to murder you tonight.”11 I asked

Him, “Why should someone like me

   have to run

Inside the temple and conceal himself

To save my life? I won’t go!” 12 Suddenly

I realized that God had not provided

Shemaiah this message, but Tobiah

And Sanballat had paid him to trick me

13 And scare me into doing

   something wrong,

For they desired to smear my good

   name, 14 then

I asked the Lord to punish both Tobiah

And Sanballat for what they had done, and

I prayed that God would punish Noadiah

The prophet and the other prophets who,

Along with her, had tried to frighten me.

15 And on the twenty-fifth day of the month

Elul, we had the wall rebuilt completely.

Our work had taken fifty-two days. 16 When

Our enemies in the surrounding lands

Learned that the work was finished,

   they felt helpless,

Because they knew that our God had

   helped us

Rebuild the wall. 17 The Jewish leaders and

Tobiah had been writing letters back

And forth all this time; 18 many people in

Judah stayed faithful to Tobiah for

Two reasons: Shecaniah, Arah’s son,

Was his own father-in-law; Jehohanan,

Tobiah’s son, had wed the daughter of

Meshullam son of Berechiah, 19 and

The people always would tell me about

Good things Tobiah had done, and then they

Would tell Tobiah everything I had

Said, so Tobiah kept on sending letters,

Trying to frighten me and make me sweat.
