“American Freedom,” poem by Day Williams

American Freedom

You’re free to worship as you please, and speak
Your mind about your leaders, travel where
You want to go, associate with weak
And strong, with poor and rich, to share and care

With others, to begin an enterprise,
To start or join a group, to marry one
You love and raise a family, to buy
And sell a house, a car, some land, a gun,

To run for public office, to delight
In privacy at home, humble abode,
To be tried fairly if you’re charged with crimes

And have a lawyer for defense, to fight
The government for rights, for changing codes:
You’re free, freer than men in any time.

He is True

He is True
You may be false
But He is true;
He’ll never leave,
Forsaking you.

NEHEMIAH CHAPTER TWELVE

NEHEMIAH CHAPTER TWELVE

1 Now these are priests and Levites who went up

          With Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,

          And with Jeshua: Seraiah, Ezra,

Jeremiah 2 and Amariah, Malluch,

Hattush 3 and Shechaniah, Rehum and

          Meremoth, 4 Iddo, Ginnetho, Abijah,

5 Miamin, Maadiah, Bilgah 6 and

          Shemaiah, and Joiarib and

          Jedaiah  and Sallu, Amok and

Hilkiah, Jedaiah. These were chief

Of priests and their own brethren in the days

Of Joshua and the Levites were: Jeshua,

Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah,

Judah, and Mattaniah, which was over

Thanksgiving, he and his own brethren.

   9 Also

Bakbukiah and Unni, their own brethren,

Were put against them in the watches; 10 of

          The priests were: Jedaiah, Joirabib’s

Son, Jachin, 11 Seraiah, Hilkiah’s

          Son, and Hilkiah was Meshullam’s son;

Meshullam was the son of Zadok, son

Of Meraioth, son of Ahitub,

The ruler of the house of God, 12 and their

Brothers who did the house’s work,

   eight hundred

And twenty-two; and Adaiah son

          Of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah,

The son of Amzi, son of Zechariah,

The son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah,

13 And his own brothers, heads of

   fathers’ houses,

          Two hundred forty-two; and Amashsai,

The son of Azarel, son of Ahzai,

Son of Meshillemoth, the son of Immer,

          14 And their own brothers,

   strong courageous men,

One hundred twenty-eight; their overseer

Was Zabdiel the son of Haggedolim.

15 And of the Levites: Shemaiah son

Of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, the son

Of Hashabiah, son of Bunni; 16 and

          Shabbethai and Jozabad, of chiefs

Of Levites, who were over outside work

For God’s house; 17 Mattaniah son of Mica,

The son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, who

Was the praise leader who gave thanks, and also

          Bakbukiah, the second of his brothers;

And Abda son of Shammua, son

Of Galal, as Jeduthun’s son, 18 and all

The Levites in the holy city were

          Two hundred eighty-four.

            19 The gatekeepers,

Akkub and Talmon and their brothers, were

One hundred seventy-two, they kept watch

At gates; 20 and all the rest of Israel,

And of the priests and Levites, were in all

The towns of Judah, every one in his

Inheritance, 21 but temple servants lived

On Ophel; over temple servants were

Ziha and Gishpa; 22 and the overseer

Of Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi

The son of Bani, son of Hashabiah,

The son of Mattaniah, son of Mica,

Of sons of Asaph, singers, over work

Of God’s house; 23 for the king commanded that

The singers have a fixed provision as

Each day required; 24 and Pethahiah, who

Was son of Meshezabel, of the sons

Of Zerah son of Judah, was beside

The king in all the matters concerned

The people; 25 as for villages and fields,

Some folks from Judah lived in Kiriath-

Arba and all its villages; in Dibon

And all its villages, and in Jekabzeel

And all its villages, 26 and in Jeshua,

Moladah and Beth-pelet, 27 and in Hazar

-Shual, in Beersheba and all of

Its villages, 28 in Ziklag, in Meconah

And all its villages, 29 in En-rimmon,

In Zorah and in Jarmuth 30 and Zanoah,

Adullam, and their villages, and Lachish

And all its fields, and Azekah and all

Its villages, and so they set up camp

From Beersheba to the Hinnom Valley.

31 Benjamites also lived from Geba onward,

At Michmash and Aija, Bethel and

Its villages, 32 and Anathoth and Nob,

Ananiah 33 and Hazor, Ramah and

Gittaim, 34 Hadid, Zeboim, Neballat,

35 And Lod and Ono, craftsman valley,

   36 and

Certain divisions of the Levites in

Judah were set aside to Benjamin.
